Addressing Conflict

The Homo Sapien is defined in the dictionary as; the specific name given to modern man, including all races, in the standard biological taxonomy which includes the extinct Cro Magnon. (Gage Canadian Dictionary)

Now, if only, we the people could view ourselves in that one simple statement, "including all races". Some of us are working towards achieving that goal. We are trying to resolve unacceptable behaviors like, bullying, racism, domestic violence, etc. Each of us starting within our own communities with support from our governments providing monies to facilitate addressing these needs and protect the people. At least I like to believe this is so.

All gardens unfortunately may get hit with some sort of a bug. The gardener therefore investigates the source of whatever problem has entered the garden. Once discovered. A choice of resolutions is decided upon for specific identification. In this case, the removal of weeds or bugs, and is implemented. A few days of gentle care and careful evaluation of the garden, will reveal if our resolution was successful and if not, then another resolution may be necessary.


Conflicts can be managed in a near similar method. There are resolution styles for conflict and are as follows ;

Winner - Loser : One winner and one loser

Lose - Lose : Two losers

No - Lose : Two winners

I wrote an article, Days of Solitaire. I had asked, what is the message you want to leave behind or make? To handle conflict that very same question will arise. What impression or message, do you want to make or leave? Resolve the real problems without personal agendas.

Alright. The No-Lose method is the desirable answer. Both parties can walk away in friendship. The same steps applied to the above mentioned problem in the garden, are the same applied with the No-Lose Conflict resolution style.

No - Lose Approach

1. Identify the problem and needs.

2. Generate solutions.

3. Implement the best solutions.

4. Evaluate the outcome.

I know it sounds too easy but it is the outcomes that will truly count. Peace has been restored and the friendship remains. After all, I don’t think anybody wants to see that opening dictionary definition with; includes the extinct Cro Magnon and....
