Reno Economic Growth

Reno, Nevada was once known as The Divorce Capital of the World, based ont he fact that residemcy for divorce proceedings could be established in a very short time. Reno has also been called Sin City and The Neon Babylon.

The Greater Reno Area (Reno-Sparks) is the County Seat of Washoe County. The city enjoyed 30% employment growth in the decade from 1998 - 2008 and continues to grow new jobs.

This growth is a major contribution to the economy of Nevada on the state level, joining with the Greater Las Vegas Area. These two metro statistical areas together provide the bulk of all new businesses and new jobs in the entire state.

BACKGROUND

Major General Jesse L. Reno was an officer in the 9th Army Corps during American Civil War. Dying on the battlefield in Maryland in 1862, he had also fought at Bull Run as well as several other battle sites. His son, Jesse W. Reno, invented the escalator and the town of Reno, Nevada is named after the general.

In 1776, the Spaniard Fray Francisco Graces entered the Nevada region to blaze a trail to the US West Coast Spanish colonies of the time, from the Colorado River. This led to future traffic, inciuding a toll bridge fashioned from a simple log laid across the Truckee River in 1859, a trail towards the Gold Rush, industries that grew with it, and the eventual founding of Reno in 1868.

Reno supplemented its early mining-based economy with its 'Sin City" brothels and gambling houses. In the 21st century, entertainment and casinos continue to play a solid part in the local economy.

Native Americans In and Around Reno, Nevada

During the Glacial Period of histoy some 12,000 years ago, ice melt in the mountains eroded the Nevada floor each summer into what are now gullies and riverbeds after the water evaporated and the glaciers receded northward.

Early Native Americans in the Reno-Las Vegas areas are called the Anasazi - the Ancient Ones. This nomenclature is more akin to the Oceana Aboriginals' and Aborigines' notion of "The People That Were Always Here" than to the more common Native American "The People" or "First People."

Pow Wows, Native Arts, and resort areas make up part of the Native American business enterprise in and around Reno. Native venues attract many trouists away from some non-tribal resorts, but the owners of those establishments have become consultants sell large numbers of supplies to these tribal businesses.

If there isn't a job here, there is always a job someplace else. Though I think Reno might be a bit fast paced for many.

Reno really isn't fast paced at all, it's nothing like Las Vegas. Really in most parts of the city you wouldn't even know it's a gaming town or that it's home to roughly 350,000 people.
