Why would you rent electronics?

If you do not have enough money to outright buy electronics, some retailers offer the option of renting to own.  This is not like opening a credit card or line of credit with a store; instead, you make monthly installments plus interest eventually paying more than retail value for electronics.  Stores like Rent-A-Center or Aarons now offer appliances and common household electronics, like computers, camcorders and televisions.  If you want the latest but cannot afford it or do not have the credit to make the purchase, renting to own might be the right solution for you.

What can you rent to own?

  • Computers
  • Televisions
  • Cameras
  • Camcorders
  • Appliances

How to rent electronics to own

In order to rent to own electronics, locate a few local retailers in your area that offer the option. Rent-A-Center and Aarons are the most popular and have locations all over the country. There may be smaller vendors, even mom and pop shops that offer the same type of service. Research all your options, then narrow down a location to use. Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions of the agreement before filling out an application.

Then, you will fill out the application and while most places will approve you instantly, sometimes you might have to wait a day or two. In most places, they simply check your employment information and make sure you have viable references. They do not run a credit check and basically take a chance on you. Once you are approved, you can make your purchase, put a down payment on the electronics item and take it home that day.

Is renting electronics to own all it is cracked up to be?

Over time, you end up paying more renting to own as opposed to buying outright.  Renting to own should be avoided unless you have tried every other option available.  While you may go home with what you want that day, you end up paying much more than you bargained for.  If you are looking to purchase electronics, save up and make the purchase when you can afford it.
