A ventilation fan or an exhaust fan is basically an electric motor with propeller or blades. Repairing ventilation or exhaust fans is not a big task. Most often the motors of these fans get burned out and all you need to do is switch off the power, open up the fan, and replace the fan motor. Most fan motors simply plug into a receptacle mounted inside the housing thus making the job easy.

Replacing an exhaust fan frequently does not require the replacement of the entire unit. Most often it is the exhaust fan’s motor that only needs to be replaced. Many exhaust fan manufacturers offer replacement fan motors that a anyone can install very easily. Replacing motor of an exhaust fan is very much simple.

To replace a bathroom or kitchen exhaust fan motor, switch off the power and inspect the fan and writing down the model number. The model number should be located somewhere in the fan housing box.

Once you have taken note of the manufacturer and model number, unscrew and unplug the fan motor and remove it along with the supporting plate.

Now unscrew and remove the blower fan off of the motor’s shaft. Make sure that you do not damage the blower fan.

Once you have removed the blower fan from the motor shaft, take the fan motor to a local home improvement center and find an equivalent replacement motor.

Once you have found a replacement exhaust fan motor, work to install it.

First install the blower fan onto the new motor’s shaft. Now connect the motor assembly back into the fan plate.

Install the fan plate back into the exhaust fan housing unit, and plug it in. Reinstall the exhaust fan grille.

Turn power back on to the fan at the electrical circuit breaker panel box.

Test the fan to make sure it operates correctly by flipping the fan switch on in the bathroom.
