In this roofing section of Hometips for home improvement, we learn about replacing a roof and whether or not you should remove the old singles.

Before replacing an asphalt shingle roof, you should check and confirm whether or to remove the old shingles before installing the new ones. It depends on how your roof is built, notably how many layers of roofing it already has, local codes, and how pristine you want the new roof to look or appear.

Most roofing experts suggest leaving the old roof. The main advantage of leaving the old roof that by doing so, you can minimize all the mess, save removal costs, and disposal expense. Leaving the old shingles has other advantages. It acts as an extra barrier against leakage and a little extra insulation.

Remember that shingles are heavy and they’re designed to carry a certain load when roofs are built. Every layer of shingles on a roof adds to the load the structure must carry. For this reason, some states allow only one layer of asphalt roofing, some will permit two roofs, and some allow even three. You should check this with your local building department.

In case you find any areas of the roof severely damaged, it is better to remove the old shingles and start from scratch. This also gives the roofer the opportunity to examine the sheathing for water damage. If you are planning to add a roof over the top of an old one, it is always a good idea to remove any loose shingles and apply a new layer of 30-pound roofing felt before laying the new shingles. This will make it even stronger and long lasting.

also be aware that most shingle companies warranties are void if not applied over a approved underlayment, which an old roof is not approved! so take caution to your decision.
