Resolutions and Spots

When the New Year rolls around, we think of new beginnings, starting over, making resolutions. As I looked up the meaning of this word "resolution," one meaning (among several for this word) there were two which pertain to the topic here.
First Definition: Fixed purpose or determination of mind, as a resolution to reform our lives; a resolution to undertake an expedition.
People usualy make New Years resolutions because they know there are things in their lives they don't like and want to change. So they make the decision to reform their life in that particular area or areas. However, I would suppose the statistics are pretty high that change will be short-lived and go back to "old" again. why? You've heard the saying, "A leopard can't change his spots." It is true for us as well. We can't change those "spots" in our lives. I've heard acquaintances make the statement they don't make resolutions anymore as they know they won't be kept.
When it comes to changing our "spots" that usually deals with a heart issue and heart issues can only be changed by the Lord Jesus Himself. That's why Jesus came into the world and when we see those "spots" in our lives that relate to heart issues the change comes when we do what 1 John 1:9 says. "If we (freely) admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins (dismiss our lawlessness) and (continuously) cleanse us from all unrighteousness (everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action)." Once the change takes place then we can more to the 2nd definition of resolution.
Second Definition: The effect of fixed purpose; firmness, steadiness, or constancy in execution, implying courage.
Be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring (Psalm 27:14) for "Those who trust in, lean on, and confidently hope in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides and stands fast forever." (Psalm 125:1) These are the ones who find success in resolutions.
