Restless Leg Syndrome Treatment
70Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a condition that is characterized by the irresistible urge to move the legs. A sufferer gets an unbearable twitch that makes it impossible to sit or lie down
for a long period of time such as when trying to sleep or rest. The urge to move is accompanied by antsy, creeping, painful, itching, or "pins and needles" sensation as described by sufferers of restless leg syndrome. Treatment can include known restless leg syndrome medication such as Requip or Mirapex. But some have used more natural remedies for restless leg syndrome as well.
Restless Leg Syndrome Causes
According to RLS Foundation, there are several possible causes of restless leg syndrome. But currently, none of them have been proven conclusively. Global
research, so far, points the restless leg syndrome causes to the following (I'm paraphrasing):
- genetics - inherting from mom, dad, and anyone else who passed it on to them
- another physical condition or ailment - RLS as resulting from something else wrong with you
- pregnancy - temporary condition for women
- anemia and low iron levels - more of a diet issue
- dialysis during end stage renal disease
- nerve damage to the hands and feet
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Restless Leg Syndrome Medication
The FDA has approved ropinirole (Requip) in 2005 and pramipexole (Mirapex) in 2006 as medicinal treatment for restless leg syndrome. These drugs were initially used for treating Parkinson's Disease. Much like any other medication, Requip and Mirapex require the help of a doctor. And as restless leg syndrome treatment, many patients appreciate the sleep and relaxation they're finally getting.
Natural Remedies for Restless Leg Syndrome
Aside from medication, there are claims of natural remedies for restless leg syndrome treatment. Herbal, mineral, and dietary supplements are often suggested. Though none have been substantiated scientifically. These include
- adding more magnesium or iron to your diet
- honey
- vitamin B6
- acupuncture
- avoiding caffeine
- regular exercise
- soap bar under bed sheet
- and many more non-medicinal treatment for restless leg syndrome
It looks to me that some of the above cures are simply a direct response to restless leg syndrome causes, specifically anemia and iron deficiency.
Restless Leg Syndrome Pregnancy
Pregnancy has been observed as one of the restless leg syndrome causes. Pregnant women, especially in the third trimester, are susceptible to getting RLS. After pregnancy, restless leg syndrome often goes way. One theory as to why this happens is the woman's low iron level. Another theory is the hormonal change occuring during pregnancy. The usual restless leg syndrome medication (see above) is not generally recommended while pregnant.

Actually, I found a terrific product for restless legs Syndrome. It is an herbal lotion in a roll-on type bottle. It has herbs to quell over-active nerves and also ones to relax muscles. My Mom uses it for leg cramps and I tried it on my restless legs. It worked great. I was really surprised because it worked in like, 5 minutes. I’ve tried lots of supplements and stuff and nothing has worked before. The stuff is called Leg Relaxer and I bought it from a company called Nature’s Rite. You should probably try it for your restless legs. … No sense dancing when you should be sleeping.
