Greetings friends! Well I've been viewing Resume Cover Letter Examples all morning because I have found a job that I want to apply for and I want to make sure that I give my prospective employer the best impression I can. A cover letter is really important. These days I know, we don't seem to use them as much when applying for jobs online. I also am guilty of such and usually won't include a cover letter unless it's a really good job I like. But, I've decided since I am back in the job market I decided that if I try and go the extra mile I should be able to reap the rewards!
The job I am applying for right now is for a Marketing Director position with a well known marketing company. So I'm going to start out the letter with my name, address and phone number followed bytoday's date:

With cover letters if I know the actual name of the hiring manager that my resume will be reviewed by I will include they're name otherwise I'll just open up with:
To Whom It May Concern:
In the first paragraph of the letter I want to communicate 5 things:
1. Why I am sending the letter in the first place.
2. What position I am interested in.
3. Where I saw the position advertised.
4. My initial interest in the position.
5. Highlight any experience I have with the position.
So I start things off as follows:
This letter is in response to your ad placed in Sunday's Star Telegram for a Marketing Director position. I am currently transitioning out of my current position and, this position is of great interest to me. I have worked closely with the Marketing Directory at my last company for the last 12 years and, I am looking for the opportunity to transition to such a position for my next job.
There you have it, I have communicated 5 things in a very short and, to the point manner. You want to avoid long cover letters. The purpose of the cover letter is to summerize who you are, what your applying for and what you can offer. A hiring manager isn't going to skim your cover letter for more than a few seconds so you want to be sure to put in information such as years of experience and other tidbits that you think might be an attention catcher.
Next I want to state my intention of wanting an interview and provide contact information. In a slightly indirect way I am going to basically ask for an interview. I find this to be very effective. I then am going to provide my contact information and close out the letter with a friendly goodbye.
I would welcome the opportunity to meet speak with you in person and, learn more about this position in the very near future. I can be reached at (503) 555-1323 and, Iook forward to hearing from you soon!
Best Regards,
Derek Todom
And that's it! Not a whole lot of content but you don't need it with cover letters. You simply need to touch on the 5 key points I listed above, communicate your intention that you would like a person to person interview and provide your contact information. It may seem a bit repetitive to include your phone number in the letter twice but I think it's a nice touch!
