He/she can even suggest various themes for you to choose from and show you a portfolio to make it easier to visualize and select.
If however you are prepared to trust your judgment, and wish to save the high cost of an interior decorator, you can do it with a bit of preparation and taking some time off to explore the various options available in the market. Gain some knowledge of interior decoration from the Internet and you will be ready to take the plunge.
It is best to start with choosing a theme for your living room. You can either have a traditional or a modern appearance. Traditional would mean using furniture in handcrafted cane, wood etc. Modern furniture could range from stainless steel to leather and also some very elegant wooden ones. A set of leather sofas, bring a great deal of class to a living room, giving a sense of taste and nobility. Color to blend with the rooms paint can be chosen from black, tan, dark brown, red, maroon etc. A sense of sophisticated taste can be projected with the use of black or dark brown. On the other hand, dark red or green will suggest cheerfulness. You can of course, always add a splash of color to the surroundings subsequently to match the chosen furniture.
The next stage is to position your furniture for optimum use of space and comfort. Place the longest piece, the three or five seater sectional sofa, along the length of the room. The singles can be placed either besides each other vertical to the longer piece, or on each side, depending on the space available, and how many sofa sets you intend furnishing the room with. Single piece recliners can be placed in a corner to give some privacy. Children usually prefer to sit on them for the comfort it provides.
To round off the effect, choose a center table that will match all the other pieces. You cannot beat a glass top for its elegance and the variety of designs that you can choose from. Mounted on a chrome frame, it will look elegant and modern and give that special sophisticated look to the living room.
Make a beginning. Start the process. Before too long, you will have a living room that will be the envy of your guests and neighbors.

Modern decor makes a great statement. New, fresh, and young. Make sure you match your living room decor to your home, in general. An old victorian home is probably not the type of home to experiment with modern decor. However, a loft or townhouse with a great view would be a great fit.
