There are many reasons to buy retractable awnings.  They are pleasant to look at and can really give your house some solid appeal.  They are also great for providing shade to an outdoor space, especially if it is a motorized retractable awning.  Then there is always the reason of providing protection from the harsh summer sun shining down through a window.  All of these reasons make a lot of sense to people who have any experience with awnings, but did you know that retractable awnings are also great at helping you keep your energy bills low?

Most people are looking for any way that they can find to keep their costs low.  With jobs being scarce and the threat of income being taken away due to a job loss they are mindful of their recurring expenses.  Things like cable bills, phone bills, heating and electric, and insurance are all becoming a top priority for families in all situations.  So finding a way to shave off a significant chunk of change from a heating and cooling bill is going to sound very attractive to many people.  Fortunately, retractable awnings do a great job of helping you cut cooling costs in the summer and heating costs in the winter

In the summer, the hot sun is going to be shining brightly into windows.  The sun will then warm up the window until it becomes hot the touch.  This will heat up the air inside your home, the very air that you are trying to cool down with your air conditioner.  In addition to the hot window, which only really is responsible for a fraction of the money lost, you are going to get the sunlight shining directly in your home.  The impact of this direct sunlight is huge and can heat your house up dramatically.*

*Some houses heated by the sun can have internal temperatures in excess of outdoor conditions.

A retractable awning can help prevent both the heating of the window and the flow of direct sunlight into the house.  This will reduce the amount of money that is going to spent on such your cooling throughout these hot times of the year. All you need to do is deploy the awning and you will be protected all summer long.  In fact, you could only open the awning when your window is going to be in direct sunlight if you want to do it that way.  The best part of retractable awnings is that you are in control of when they are open.

Then in the winter you can use the power of the sun to keep your house warm which will then reduce your need to heat your home.  You will be using the same heating power of the sun that you were trying to block in the summer to heat your house during the winter.  To get this effect you will need to retract your awning so that it is stored in its housing.  This is probably best anyway so that it can be protected from the elements.  The sun will then shine into your windows and help heat it and reduce your heating bill.

It is in this way that retractable awnings can be energy efficient and help save home owners hundreds of dollars a year depending on the quality of their windows, their position on the house, and how sever summers and winters are in the region.

You can buy a retractable awning at one of the many home improvement stores in the US or you can order them on the Internet.  I would recommend going to a store to get an idea of the awning that you want and then checking prices on the Internet to see if you get a good deal.  The only downside with Internet shopping is that the cost to ship a retractable awning can be expensive.
