Affiliate marketing was responsible for billions of dollars worth of revenue over the past year, and much of that centered on the all-important holiday shopping season. Cost Per Click

In “cost per click” or CPC, the Advertiser has arranged to pay the Publisher or Affiliate each time a visitor ends up in the Advertiser’s website from the link in the Publisher’s website. What actually happens is that the Publisher has articles or products that have attracted Internet users. And while the Internet user is in the website of the Publisher, this Internet user will be aware of the existence of the Advertiser’s website.

In the ads or banner of the Advertiser, there will be one or two sentences that will entice the Internet user to visit the Advertiser’s website. Of course, the Advertiser may have several Publishers and it will have a system that will identify which Publisher has referred the visitor.

Cost Per Lead

In “cost per lead” or CPL, the visitor that was referred by the Publisher must sign-up or fill-up a form before the Publisher is entitled to a commission or compensation. When the visitor signs-up, he becomes a lead for the Advertiser to more target clients. Since a lead is more valuable than a simple visitor, the compensation given to the Publisher for each lead is relatively higher than the pay for each visitor.

Cost Per Acquisition

In “cost per acquisition” or CPA, the visitor that was referred by the Publisher decides to purchase the products or services from the website of the Advertiser. The visitor becomes a paying customer. When there is a paying customer, the Advertiser earns income. And when the Advertiser earns income, a part of it is shared with the Publisher in the form of a commission.

We see these kinds of advertisements everywhere, and most people will look away. However, someone will eventually get suckered in. This is one of the most common mistakes that novice affiliate marketers make and fall victim to. By the time they realize that they might have been over promised and duped, it is too late. Their money and time is gone, and they just might quit this business because they didn't make the money they wanted in the timeframe they hoped for.

Affiliate marketing is frequently seen as something anyone can make good money from. After all people are always testifying about how this program is the best, how it changed their life, and how much money they made in how little time.

It seems like all you have to do is join affiliate programs, set up your advertisements and start watching the profits roll in. Not going to happen without a lot of work and dedication on your part.

Of course the "gurus" and other super affiliates make affiliate marketing look easy. But anyone good at anything can make anything look easy. The only way they made it to the top is by constantly learning, practicing, and doing things to better their affiliate marketing. The only way it can be easy for you is if you keep learning and researching the strategies and tricks of affiliate marketing, but most of your knowledge will come from personal experience. You learn the most from doing.

In deciding what affiliate marketing program you would like to join, you should choose a product that you are interested in. The success of how well you do in this program will

depend on how good you are at marketing the product. If the product is something you have no interest in or know nothing about, this will be reflected.

Also in regards to choosing the right program, you should pick one that can be easily marketed. If you become the affiliate of a product that only you and the product owner is interested in , you will not make any money and have a hard time getting people to sign up.

After you have chosen a product that you like and can market, if would be a good idea to investigate more closely the affiliate program that is being offered. If the product has a successful number of affiliates who are generally happy with things, then you can consider joining this program. However, if the affiliates of a particular program are disgruntled have many complaints about the company, then you should stay away from this company. This is why it is important to receive feedback from other affiliates.

Also this would be a good time to mention that it is not a good idea to choose a program with thousands of affiliates. This is because the market will be saturated with them, and instead of signing up or buying your product; the customer will just ignore one of many hundreds of ads they have seen before. There is one affiliate program that comes to mind! However, it is best to sign up with an affiliate marketing program that is not too saturated but has been stable for a few months.

Of course the best piece of advice about becoming an affiliate is to market and promote continuously. This could mean either offline or online types of promotion. Many affiliate programs will provide marketing tools to their affiliates such as banners and text links. You can use these everywhere to encourage people to buy the product. How good you are at marketing will determine how successful you are with your affiliate program.

Writing articles with worthwhile informational content is an excellent strategy for successful marketing. Make sure that your article contains useful information that targets your audience and doesn't sound like a sales copy or ad.

Studies have shown that banner ads are not the best strategy and that visitors actually avoid them. If you must use them make sure they're used sparingly and well placed. One very important tip to remember is that as an affiliate it is not your job to sell. The only job you have is to pre-sell. Once you've done your job correctly and "get the click" then it's the merchant's job to close the deal.

Last but certainly not least, another important tip is to Know Your Product. If you know everything there is to know about it then it's much easier to inform your readers of how it can work for them or why they should buy the product. So, therefore, if it's in your budget you should buy it before you pre-sell it.
