Forgetting Sarah Marshall......remember it!

With the last few Judd Apatow pictures that came out, I started to wonder if I'd outgrown this type of movie. Or perhaps, the fad was done. The jokes seemed kind of stale. "Knocked Up" was definitely a let down for me having gotten excessive praise from many others. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" however, has renewed my excitement for Apatow et al., movies.

The advertising for this movie has been pretty unusual with the billboards ("My mom always HATED you Sarah Marshall!") all over, so I had no idea what to expect and was really not sure how the movie would play out. Would it be a disgruntled ex with crazy schemes to win back his true love? (Yawn.)

The premise behind the movie is that following a break-up with his girlfriend (Sarah Marshall - played by Kristen Bell) of five years, Peter (Jason Segel) tries to move on and get over her. Easier said than done. Not really having much success, Peter takes a vacation to Hawaii. Unfortunately, it's at the same resort that Sarah and her new boyfriend (Aldous Snow - played by Russell Brand) are staying at.

There are many factors that make this a really enjoyable movie. First, the cast. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of the TV shows that these actors are on ("How I Met Your Mother", "That 70s Show", etc.). But, I have to say there's great chemistry among the whole cast. Second, it's easy to relate to Peter and his struggle to move on after his breakup. There's something in the movie for anyone who's been dumped or been the dumper - moments where you'll think "Yeah! So true!". Finally, a really funny (raunchy) script carries things a long way. This movie reminded me a lot of "40-year old Virgin", in that it's easy to root for the main character and you really want to see him come out ahead in the end.

I'm definitely planning on adding this one to the DVD collection down the road. There may be better movies out right now, but if you are looking for a good comedy, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is a good bet.

Thanks Nathan! Really looking forward to seeing this one again - it always seems like there are subtle but hillarious lines that you notice in the Apatow flicks after a few re-watches.
