You've probably seen the infomercials all over late night television. You may even know a few people who've started and some have even finished the 90 day program known as P90X. As a weight loss program, this is one of the most popular by far.
I've used the DVD's and completed the program over the past vew months. This hub will give you a no-holds-barred review of the system so many people are raving about. Does it work? How fit do you need to be to start? How fit will you be when you're done? How much weight will you lose? Do you have to diet as well?
If you're not OK with calling in to buy products from an infomercial, you'll be happy to know there are other outlets for picking up your P90X. Amazon.com is selling it as well as other places offering at or near wholesale cost.
All these questions and more will be answered below. But first, let's take a look at a small sample of the infomercial so you get an idea of what's being pitched.

What Comes in the Mail
The DVD's
When you get your package in the mail, you'll see all 13 DVD's in a nice little case. Over the course of the next 90 days, you'll pulling this out and putting them back in nightly. It's nice to have one place you know they all go.
Overview Book
You'll also find a book with an overview of the program as well as a detailed explaination of all of the exercises you'll be doing. This is a book you're going to reference often so keep it close at hand for the next 90 days. Fortunately, it's very well made and will put up with your sweaty hands flipping through it for some clarification in the middle of an exercise.
Food Guide
Another item you're going to be looking at quite a bit is the cooking or recipe guide. This will have some, but not all of the recipes you'll need for the full 90 days. It will teach the nutritional levels Tony Horton suggests for each stage of your P90X challange. As you get in better shape and lose some of your weight, your nutritional needs change. This book also offers several methods for staying on the plan. If you're not one to count calories, Tony shows you a great way to watch what you eat with simple portioning.
Tracking Chart
Lastly, you'll find a nice chart you can use to keep yourself on track. It's designed to be hung on the wall, but I find it doesn't go well with most decor you'll find today other than a college dorm. I just kept my folded up with the rest of the books.
What P90X Doesn't Come With
A lot of people are surprised to find out there are a few extra items they're going to need to complete the P90X program. It's not a big deal, but it can cause a bit of a delay in getting started if you don't know this.
For starters, you're going to need either a pull-up bar or some "resistance bands." If you go with the resistance bands, they can also take the place of your dumbells in most situations. That's the other thing you're going to need, a good set of dumbells. I've included some below that will work for most people just getting started. If you find the weights aren't big enough, you'll have to move up. But this will get you started.
Here are the items I HIGHLY recommend. I promise you, you won't find a better price than Amazon. Order these when you get you DVD's and you'll have everything you need to get started as soon as P90X arrives.

This is required to successfully complete the P90X program. This is a very quality pull up bar.

The Workouts
DVD 1 - Core Synergystics
Core synergystics is an Awesome workout because even though it targets your core muscles you also get a great cardio workout as well. When losing fat it is is very important to work all of your core muscles at the same time so you will have the lean look that you are working so hard for. Even though its a workout that is used only one time a month, it plays a major roll in how you will develope.
DVD 2 - Plyometrics
I'm not going to sugarcoat this one. It is a hard workout! Plyometrics incorporates alot of jumping so its great for people who are into sports helping to improve their speed, agility, and endurance.
DVD 3 - Kenpo X
Kenpo X is a great cardio kick boxing workout. This will kick your butt and legs into shape. This was one of my favorite workouts in the bunch.
DVD 4 - Cardio X
This Dvd is only 35 minutes and is probably the simplest of all. They suggest using this DVD in the lean or doubles version of the progrm by giving you an extra workout that combines Yoga, plyomeetrics, Kenpo X and Core synergistics.
DVD 5 - Chest and Back
This DVD is used on day one of the program and all you need to get started is a bar and a floor. When I first started, I didn't realize there were so many way to do a simple pull-up or a push-up. Some of the back exercises do require you to use a set of free weights which you can pick up at a reasonable price.
DVD 6 - Legs and Back
Taking care of your legs and back are very important, so make sure you not to miss this one. In this workout you will be doing alot of lunges and squats that will really work you glutes. The first time my husband and I did this workout, going up the stairs was out of the question for a few days......... it was great! A set of free weights is required for the back exercises.
DVD 7 - Yoga
Yoga was a first for me. I knew of friends who loved it but never had the desire to do it myself. maybe it was all the chanting that scared me off. But I have to say I was pleasently surprised at how much i liked it. When starting out, it was really hard to imagine that I would ever get into those poses much less get back out of them, but after a few weeks into it you will find yourself reaching further and bending into positions you never though you could just as I did.
DVD 8 - Shoulders and Arms
Shoulders and Arms is a free weight day. You will be doing lots of shoulder presses, curls and tricep exercises. Make sure you are using a weight that is appropriate for you so you don't put too much strain on your neck.
DVD 9 - Back and Biceps
A few years ago a hurt my shoulder while doing bench presses that caused me to lose alot of strength in my right arm. I lived with the pain for to long and finally went in for surgery. Since then I have been doing these exercises and have just about gained back full strength in less than 90 days.
DVD 10 - Chest, shoulders and Back
In This workout Tony has you doing alot of floor work again. You will learn exercises like the one arm push up and the plyo Push up while doing a few you probably have never heard of like the Pike and the Plange Push up.
DVD 11 - X Stretch
X Stretch is a great routine to do in combination with your weight training and cardio days. It's very important to keep you muscles limber so you wont find yourself getting injured. Tony has you doing strech exercies that will work through your whole body and you will feel great when you're done.
DVD 12 - AB Ripper X
The Mother of all Ab workouts! This is the best Ab routine I have ever done. For 15 minutes non-stop you will go through exercise after exercise while keeping your core tight and praying you can make it through without quiting. It is a serious Abs workout and is really hard to keep up with Tony in the beginning weeks. Not only is this a tuff workout, but three times a week you will be adding this workout to your workout day making your workout time an extra 15 minutes long.
As you can see this is a workout that will push you to your limits while helping you to achieve the body you are striving for. If you give yourself 90 days to stay on the program you will not be disappointed.
One of the best things I found about this program is that all the work is done for you. You dont have to figure out your days of rest or what to eat because Tony has figured it all out for you, all you have to do is follow the plan. There are no monthly gym memberships because you do it from you own livingroom, All you need is a pull up bar, a set of free weight or a resistance band and you are ready.
Save Some Money on P90X
As we all know, a lot of people will buy something like P90X with the intent to make a permanent change in life. Unfortunately, the majority of people will eventually give up on the idea. There are closets all around the world full of pieces of fitness equipment.
Ebay is a great place to pick up a used set of P90X DVD's. This could save you a considerable amount of money.

nice hub. I just started Insanity Workout http://www.scoreboardfitness.com/ - It's more plyo/cardio than P90X but less muscle building. I'm finding that I have more energy and can sleep more soundly at night too
