During clinical studies of prostrate drugs it was found that men in the program who also showed signs of MPB showed marked hair growth during the trial period.   This lead to the thought that there may be a correlation.  Further studies found high levels of DHT had a direct statistical relationship to hair loss in men.  New studies of these prostrate drugs were initiated with hair loss and re-growth as the targets and it was proved that they could help with stopping and reversing hair loss in about 75% of the men.

The mechanism for hair loss caused by a build up of DHT is really quite easy to explain.  Hair grows from follicles which are like the little factories that take nutritional elements provided from the body and use them to build hair shafts then are then grown from the roots up.  One of the elements is protein but there are many others that are required for healthy hair growth.  Like all systems in the body these nutritional elements are transported from the digestive track to the  hair follicles by way of the blood stream.

DHT will bond with the hair follicles at the area where the blood supply normally passes these nutrients and oxygen and thus stops the normal flow of these.  This decrease in nutrition and oxygen will slow down growth of the hair and eventually will choke off and kill the hair growing portion.  This is why men who suffer from MPB usually see their hair thinning, often called peach fuzz, before it falls out completely.
