What is Ringworm?

Ringworm is the name of a contagious infection, caused by fungus and not by worm. The shape of it resembles a round shaped worm or ring on patient's skin.

Jock Itch is another related fungal infection of ringworm that occurs mainly in the groin area.

Tinea is another name for ringworm. However, this infection gets its name depending on the area of your body, it affects. For instance, if it affects scalp or head, then it is tinea capitis. What causes Ringworm?

The fungal spores that cause ringworm is normally found on different people or animals carrying this infection, or even in the soil around you. They enter your body if there is any break or opening in the skin from the source. Moreover, the most areas that are normally affected by ringworms are warm or damp areas. Therefore, fungal spores survive and increase mainly in the areas you sweat a lot.

Contacting the person or animals infected with ringworm can cause ringworm in you. Sharing of combs or unclean clothes are main ways to pass on this infection from human beings. Working on farms or being with pets can cause ringworm infection. Even if the surfaces in the swimming pools are not washed, ringworm infection can occur.

Diagnosing Ringworm

Diagnosing ringworm is quite easy due to its distinct characteristics of red circular scaly ring. However, doctors go one step ahead to diagnose the infection by collecting the infected skin or hair in case, the person has scalp or head ringworm and examining it under a microscope.

What is the Treatment of Ringworm?

Treatment is given according to the type of ringworm (i.e. the area of infection) you are suffering from.

If the ringworm is diagnosed in the early stages, then you can use an oral anti-fungal medication or cream for external use from a pharmacist. Fungrx works best to cure ringworm infection.
