Theyyam : Theyyam is also kown as Thirra in some places .It is A ritual dance form of Kerala, glorifying the goddess . Theyyam, the colourful ritual art form, is an integral part of the life of people in Malabar central region of Kerala. Main Themes revolve around the triumph of the goddess over the Evil Daruka and other evil characters. This ritual art is always performed by men, females are not involved in this .Males are wearing exotic make up and colorful costumes.

Theyyam also known as Kaaliyattam, in some places . it is a ritual dance popular in north Kerala . But some ritual performed in Kaaliyattam is different from Theyyam

Theyyam contains dance, mime and music of ancient tribal cultures which attached great importance to the worship of heroes and the spirits of ancestors. Of the over 400 Theyyams performed, the most spectacular ones are those of

  • Raktha Chamundi (Blood Godess - Remebering bloodsheded old days)
  • Kari Chamundi (Black Godess )
  • Muchilottu Bhagavathi
  • Wayanadu Kulaveni
  • Gulikan
  • Pottan.

These are performed in front of temples, in stage or with curtains, by persons belonging to the Vannan, Malayan and other any trial castes in Kerala.

In theyyam following are included

'Thudangal' (Known as the beginning of rituals) 

'Thottam' (Known as the invocation)

These are the introductory rituals of the Theyyam

. The headgear and other ornamental decorations are spectacular in sheer size and appearance. Karivalloor, Nileswaram, Kurumathoor, Parassini, Cherukunnu, Ezhom and Kunnathoorpadi in north Malabar are places where Theyyams are performed annually from December to April
