Bagumbayan a hero laid to rest

On December 30, 1898 nearing the end of the Philippine-Spanish war a young novelist and considered the Philippines most noble hero, Dr. Jose P Rizal was executed by the Spanish firing squad in a place formerly called "Bagumbayan" or the old Luneta Park in Manila. Renamed after the national hero himself an activist, who by his writings of two novels, "Noli me Tangere"[touch me not]and "El Filibusterismo"[the filibuster]respectively; are a must reading in the subject of Rizal's life and works offered in secondary school and in college as well. Today, two Philippine Military Academy cadets on twenty four hour shifts stand guard in this monument park similar to Bukingham Palace in London, Great Britain where these guards never wink an eye to passersby or tourists. Luneta as the old name connotes is in the heart of Manila the capital city of the Philippines. Rizal park is known for its man made pond or lake, a stone map of the Philippines, the Chinese garden and the flower clock[no longer functioning]. Local and foreign tourists alike get to have a glimpse of the park as it is the most historical landmark when visiting the Philippines particularly in Manila. It was once a symbol of freedom of the Filipino people who fought against Spanish rule and oppression being then enslaved for more than four hundred years. Hence, the death of Rizal who has become a national martyr is well remembered in his farewell poem when he said, "the youth is the future of this nation."
