Where to road trip?

The question of where to road trip is entirely up to you. You may decide to have a road trip in your own country, or do a fly-and-drive (fly to the place and take the road trip from there). Here are some I think are pretty interesting.

Historic Route 66 - If you're American or just want a little bit of that retro culture, head out to the historic Route 66 which begins in Arizona and ends up in Missouri. It's no longer an official 'route' but it's still a very interesting drive. Travel past the amazing Native American Indian cultural parts and through the American mid-west and great plains. A great trip the family will enjoy.

Nullarbor Plains - Not for the faint of heart! 'Nullarbor' is derived from Latin and literally means 'no trees'. Travel from Perth, Western Australia to Adelaide, South Australia and beyond on the world's largest piece of limestone. You can also travel along Australia's longest straight piece of road (the 90 mile straight... after decimalisation, '146.6km straight' just didn't feel the same). For the more serious bush trekker, take a look at the Canning Stock Route. There are simply not enough petrol stations on this route, so you'll need to refuel yourself. You also need a permit from the Aboriginal people of the area. Don't go unprepared!

Cultural Europe - If you're not into the desert and outback, have a go at crossing Europe. The great thing about this trip is the flexibility. You can start in Portugal and end in Russia, or just do a mini-crossing and go from say, France to Denmark. This trip is great for culture as you've got so many different countries and societies ahead of you. I really want to do this one someday!

There are so many possibilities when it comes to road trips, but always remember to be safe! Let somebody know your itinerary and plan ahead. If you're going bush, remember a satellite phone as you may need it. If you don't want to buy one, you can easily rent one. Never travel alone, and keep enough supplies to survive for at least a few days if you're stranded. Good luck!

Mistakes People Make

So you start off on your road trip across the country and realise you've forgotten your cellphone. Not to worry... there are plenty of payphones along the way. Stop right there! More recently, payphones have been going out of style: people have been getting cellphones and don't use payphones anymore so the local telephone company just rips them out as they're not profitable. Never, ever set off on a road trip without a cellphone, and if you're travelling in outback Australia for example, bring along (or rent) a satellite phone.

That unsealed road won't last long, and I'm sure my Hyundai Getz can handle a mile or so of dirt. Wrong! You'll be surprised at how far those unsealed roads can go. For example, up until about a decade ago, a 300-mile major road in Australia was unsealed. Sometimes the maps don't even show whether the road is sealed or not. Beware!

Let's just get in the car and drive! Don't. Plan almost everything. Remember, you might not see a gas station for miles... and with no cellphone reception, things can get ugly.

The kids will just sleep all the way. No, they won't... trust me! Pack a variety of electronic and non-electronic entertainment. The scenery probably won't entertain them (unless you're driving through Disney World...).
