Rock Climbing Gear

Rock climbing is one of the most exciting sports throughout the world and sees its participants climb up natural rock formations and walls in order to reach an endpoint. Rock climbing has the potential for danger and so all participants must be physically and mentally fit for such a challenge. Climbing high mountains requires strength, endurance agility and controlled balance. In addition to athletic prowess, climbers must use special rock climbing gear and other equipment to ensure their safety.

What is the basic rock climbing gear or mountain climbing gear that you will come across in the sport? Theoretically, rock climbing could be done without any special equipment. However, to do so would not be safe. Most of the equipment you find advertised for rock climbing is to protect the participant. You start with the climbing shoes, which not only protect a person’s feet, but also help him or her to maintain a strong footing. Climbing shoes also offer improved friction, tight fitting and strong protection against sharp objects.

Next in rock climbing gear you have rope, usually made from nylon and tested to exactling UIAA specification. Climbing rope is continuously braided and has a durable outer sheath that protects the inner core of the rope, the strongest part. However, this rope is not just rock solid; it must also be flexible so that it can stretch under extreme tension. This construction allows the person to fall at a gentler pace than if the rope were built tight. Other equipment you can look for include carabiners, which are rings of solid aluminum with a spring-loaded gate, and tubular nylon webbing, which does not stretch like climbing rope.

The rock climber can attach him or herself to a harness, which connects to the climbing rope. This gear piece usually has a wide nylon belt for the waist and a pair of leg hoops to accommodate a person’s thighs. This piece can be handy, since it puts most of the weight on a person’s legs, decreasing the effort required. There are also belay devices, monolithic protection and SLCDs shoppers can look into.

Above all, knowledge is important when it comes to rock climbing or mountain climbing gear. Enjoy this exciting sport but make sure to read up on rock climbing basics and the gear that can help protect you.
