Innovations in rock music have been going on in the major regional centers of rock-New York, Kingston, Jamaica, Liverpool, yet its influence is spread worldwide.

Guitar: The main instrument used in Rock music

The central instrument used in rock music is the Guitar, which was first introduced in the late 1930’s by Jazz musician Charlie Christian, Aaron Thibeaux “t-bone” Walker was the first artist to record with a Guitar. Leo fender, in 1948 first introduced the mass produced soled bodied electric guitar. In later years musicians like Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana, with new guitar styles and amplification employing various electronic devices, for e.g. feedback.

Other common instruments used are the electric Bass guitar which was introduced by fender in 1951,keyboard instruments like the electric piano, organ, and the synthesizer. A drum set, which came into rock music from its influence from African American music, the jazz and the R&B. Other instruments include the Saxophone and many more. The microphone is also used as an instrument by rock singers to add modulation to their voices and their styles of singing.

High tech effects and loud volume to entertain a big crowd

Majorly Rock music is performed and played at very high levels of volume, so the music is closely tied to the developments made in electronic technology. Rock musicians have mastered studio recording techniques, like multi-tracking which is the process of recording different song segments at different times and layering them on top of each other, and digital sampling, the reproduction using a computer of the patterns of a particular sound sequences.

Rock concerts which are typically huge events involving thousands of audience members, often feature high-tech stage effects, including lighting and fireworks.

Influence of Advance Technology

The way rock music is produced, heard and sold is also very heavily influenced by the advancements in technology. Development of low cost digital recording technology has allowed musicians to record professional quality recordings at their homes.

Emergence of websites like MP3.com, Napster.com, which allows music lovers to download their favorite music and enjoy it then and there. Now music lovers can create music CD’s, download their songs on their mobiles or listen to them on their ipods. Musicians are also experimenting nowadays by remixing different genres of music together like, rock and hip hop or rock and classical.
