Glass Ceilings and Other Breakable Things

Women in this country are getting a bit of the short stick.

Women live longer.

Women get paid 77 cents to every dollar a man makes.

Women will hence make less money and make less for retirement and pension plans, which means living longer will be super fun.

Women executives only see the top office in SIX PERCENT of the Fortune 500 companies.

Women are more likely to take on loans and mortgages and HAVE HIGHER CREDIT SCORES, yet somehow pay higher interest rates than men.

Women are also heading to the workplace in veritable droves--50 years ago, only 34% of women aged 25-34 worked. That figure is now up to 76.3%, which means we have more competition than ever.

Look Around--And Behind

There are some AMAZING women out there that are pushing for equal footing in the world, like Queen Rania of Jordan, who wants to see Islamic women respected and understood by the world at large. Not so far off from Queen Elizabeth I, who fought every day of her life to maintain the same respect that her male forebears had received from the peers of the realm.

There are the obvious ones that we all know about, like Hilary Clinton, who, say what you want about her politics, is the first woman to raise a strong supporter base for a presidential campaign.

But how about Margaret Thatcher, Britains first female prime minister? How about Sandra Day O'Connor, first Supreme Court Justice? How about Angela Braly, CEO of the country's largest healthcare conglomerate, and the only woman to be CEO of a Fortune 50 company?

And what about your mom? Sounds strange, I know, but right now women are being hailed as bringing a new managerial style to the corporate environment. They are excelling in mentoring, advising, and creating a consistent role model for their peers, boosting employee satisfaction. They are said to have a more democratic attitude to running an office--everyone gets a say and the final decision is made by the boss. All of this leads to the female as a more effective leader--and to me, it sounds a lot like all of the necessary skills learned while raising or being part of a family.

So rock on, women! And don't be afraid to take the skills you learn in other parts of your life--like running a household or raising your kids--and apply them to your job. Not only will it not hurt you, it might take you a step above the guys.

And as always, remember to check me out at my blog!

Props to you for mentioning Elizabeth I - she was quite a powerful and cunning woman who more of today's ladies should look up too (instead of Jessica Alba - no offence, Jess!). We all have to remember that each little push we make is a step in the right direction, and our little eeks forward will make things just that much better for women in the next generation. Hopefully our granddaughts will see $.90 to a male dollar!

its no doubt a stimulation for all the women out there. As one rightly said...."because i am a woman, i must make unusual efforts to succeed. if i fail, they won't say,she doesn't have what it takes. They will say, women don't have what it takes".
