"Good ol' Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennessee!" Did you know that this popular foot-stompin' sing-along song called simply, "Rocky Top," is actually one of state songs of the Tennessee, adopted in 1982. There are six other state songs, but those are for other Tennessee hub pages.
Yep, Tennessee: home of taters, grits, DollyWood, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Grand Ole Opry, dogwoods and the Cornbread Festival. It's also home to the University of Tennessee Volunteers, the Old Mill, moonshine stills, Harley Davidson motorcycle boots and more.
The "Rocky Top" song is also the University of Tennessee Volunteers' unofficial fight song. Of course you need to shout, "Woow!" throughout the song after the words, "Rocky Top."
Here are some more fun facts about Rocky Top :
1) Mr. and Mrs. Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, songwriters, actually wrote this song back in 1967 in ten minutes flat. At the time, they were writing some slower-beat songs for Chet Atkins and Archie Campbell in Gatlinburg, and were taking a little time out for a fun pick-me-up break beat.
2) Rocky Top was originally recorded in 1967 by the Osborne Brothers.
3) At the beginning of 1968, this song became a top 40 hit on the country music charts.
4) It wasn't until 1970 when Lynn Anderson sang the tune did the song reach mega heights in popularity.
5) When the University of Tennessee marching band added the song to their drills in 1972, the song grew even more popular.
6) Rocky Top actually refers to one of the three peaks - one that is right on the border of North Carolina - of Thunderhead Mountain in the Smoky Mountains in eastern Tennessee.
7) "Rocky Top" is ranked number seven on the list of 100 Songs of the South by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (2005).
8) Disneyland, Paris even showcased this snappy tune in their 2007-2008 show, "Mickey's Winter Wonderland," with bears dancing to the tune.
So grab your pardner, hit the billiards hall and take off your motorcycle jackets. Relax and enjoy, "Rocky Top!"

It's the best song for 'clogging' to! When I lived in Tennessee, I used to line dance and that was one of the most popular songs played! Thanks for writing this hub and reminding me what a great state Tennessee is.
