What is *rogue like*-game?

You might be wondering about the meaning of the word "Rogue like game". It's a computer-based roleplaying game following the format of a computer game called Rogue, that was published on 1980. It was coded by using ASCII letters, which created a primitive image of graphics on the computer screen. In the old days Rogue didn't have very advanced gameplay, in a nutshell you had to run through randomly created tunnel levels that were created with these keyboard symbols.

Nowadays rogue like games have advanced quite abit, and many of you might find them quite interesting and entertaining once you get a hold of the idea behind these games. Lacking actual graphics gives people a chance to use their own imagination on how everything happens, how different kinds of places would look like, what kind of monsters would be lurking ahead and so on.

Rogue games branch into 3 subtypes of games:

  1. Hacklikes: where levels persist after being left. where levels persist after being left.
  2. *Bands, based on the game Moria, where levels are regenerated after being left. Contemporary examples are Angband and its variants.
  3. Overworld games, where more than one dungeon exists. Notable examples are Omega (dungeons regenerated upon exit), Adom (all dungeons but one preserved when left), later versions of ZAngband, Tome, and Castle of the winds.

Personally I prefer Adom and it's variants myself as the ventured virtual world prevails and the gameplay is quite advanced there. To play these games, you need to download and install the game file from a gamesite for free (although you can make a donation or sometimes buy a bit advanced version of the game), create a character and take a step into your new world! Adom and many others offer helpfiles and menus that are easy to understand and learn. Several fans of these games have also created websites about playing in these games, including cheats, spoils, information about items, places and monsters so I don't recommend checking out all of the information out there if you want to keep your imagination about the ventured virtual world.

Check out the websites of few of the authors coding these games in links section. Personally I recommend trying out Adom, Dungeon Crawl and Angband.

I'm a geek. There it is said. I used to MUD a lot, but I don't think I've tried a rogue-variant before, and my fingers began twitching when you described the interface. ASCII has a way of making my skin break into cold sweat, and the command-prompt-black adds to it. WIll check it out!
