Whoever said that simplicity is the ultimate mark of sophistication must have been referring to the Rolex Cellinium watches. That is because Cellinium models - part of Rolex's Cellini line -- are the epitome of the discreet elegance that never goes out of style.

Hand-wound

While most of today's watches are equipped with automatic movements, the Cellinium models are hand-wound. You may wonder why anyone would willingly eschew modern technology for a more primitive - excuse the pun - hands-on manoeuver. You may be surprised to know that a lot of watch aficionados feel that a hand-wound calibre provides a more tactile pleasure. There is definitely something to be said for rediscovering the fine art of old-fashioned watchmaking.

Design traits

All the Cellinium watches have the same basic design - the polished platinum case, the wide, smooth bezel, the small second hand at six o'clock, and the black leather strap. The only difference between the models is the dial. One model features a white mother-of-pearl dial, another an ice blue one, and the third a black one.

I like this last model the most because of the way the black dial and leather strap contrast with the polished platinum. The look is simple, plain even, but to me this is pure classicism at its best (well, obviously not a nod to rococo, baroque or other garish traditions of pre-revolutionary France...)

Whom the Cellinium beckons

You will like the Cellinium watches if you have an affinity for a minimalist, unadorned design. If, however, you prefer a wristwatch with more stylistic vigour to it, Rolex's Datejust line has a wide choice of dressier models.

Remember, too, that Cellinium timepieces are not waterproof or robust enough for any extreme outdoor exploits. If roughing it out in the wilderness is your style, Rolex's amphibious sport models such as the Explorer II, the Sea-Dweller 4000, or the Submariner Date, will withstand the pressure.

Even as a sports enthusiast, I appreciate the muted simplicity and elegance of a Cellinium timepiece. I see it as a watch that speaks volumes without being too loud.
