Like all the models in the Cellini line, the Rolex Danaos collection is classically elegant with no dazzling adornments to tarnish its clean and simple lines.

A departure in shape

And, like other Cellini gents' models, the Danaos watches are all hand-wound with the exception of the lone ladies' timepiece that has a quartz movement, as do most Cellini women's models.

The common denominator in all Danaos watches is the unusual shape of its bezel. It looks as though Rolex designers started out with a square and chiseled its corners until there were no more hard edges. I can't decide which description befits this design better: a rounded square, or a square-shaped circle?

Either way I like this design a lot because it is a bit different from the other Rolex creations. It has a touch of frivolity to it without being overwhelming. After all, the particularity of almost all Cellini watches is their muted simplicity.

A bit busy for my taste, but an unusual beauty nonetheless

The gents' models all have leather straps in neutral tones - another specificity of the Cellini watches - and are in 18-carat white or yellow gold, or the combination of white gold with pink. You guessed it: the white gold models are my favourite, especially the ones with all-white dials. I just like the visual effect of the crisp, steely look.

The lone ladies' model, in yellow gold with a white dial and a dark green leather strap also looks quite sharp. I am not, however, enamored of the other Danaos men's models featuring a two-toned gold and black dial. The inner circles and oversized hour markings clutter this otherwise fine watch and result in a loud look which, in my humble opinion, is not coherent with the overall understated classicism of the Cellini line. Still, I suppose Rolex has to manufacture watches that meet the requirements of a broad array of tastes, not just mine!

If you like discreet simplicity and an uncluttered design, you shall not be disappointed with the Danaos line. It, as well as other classically elegant Cellini watches, make me think of this quote from the fine American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "The supreme excellence," he said, "is simplicity."
