I am a real fan of the Rolex Datejust line, which ranges from extremely dressy to understated. The common thread that holds all these models together is classic elegance and functionality.

Styles for every taste

For example, if you like very flashy watches, you might fall for a superbly crafted 18-carat yellow gold model featuring a white mother-of-pearl dial with diamonds, a brilliants-encrusted bezel and bracelet. Or why not dazzle in an 18-carat white gold model with a diamond-paved dial, blue enamel Roman numerals and a bezel set with brilliants. Too ostentatious for me, but I am not exactly a fashionista.

For more subdued tastes such as mine, there is a range of simpler models in Rolesor or white gold, with cleaner lines and a tidy look.

Turn-o-graph - time yourself

For a classic Datejust with an extra feature, you might want to check out the Turn-o-graph models with second markers allowing the wearers to time themselves. This model, introduced in the mid-1950s, was the cornerstone on which Rolex's amphibious models such as the Submariner, the Sea-Dweller and the Yachtmaster, were built.

The current Turn-o-graph models, available in steel as well as 18-carat yellow, white and pink gold, with Oyster or Jubilee bracelets and white, black, or slate dials, feature fluted bezels that can be turned in either direction to measure intervals (of under one minute) of elapsed time.

You will like the Turn-o-graph if you are enamored of the Rolex Datejust line, but would like a sporty touch to it. However, keep in mind that Turn-o-graph is not water-resistant beyond 330 feet (100 metres) and may not be sturdy enough for extreme sport exploits. The Rolex Explorer, as well as the three submersible models mentioned above, will be a better choice.

If, however, you are not going to scale mountains or swim with the dolphins, the versatile Datejust watch will not disappoint. It is, after all, a true Rolex watch classic that generations of future wristwatches patterned themselves after.
