By James Montgomery

The Rolex Day-Date watch, featuring, as you may have guessed from its revelatory name, the date function, was first released in 1956. It launched a gold-linked bracelet with a concealed clasp called "the President wristband," which looks like a blend of the Oyster and Jubilee bands.

Presidential origins

Rolex reportedly gave this watch to the then United States President Dwight Eisenhower to coincide with the introduction of the concealed clasp. Other U.S. Presidents wore the model as well, including John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. While the name "President" stuck in the U.S., in Europe this model is known only by its original name of Day-Date.

That is a rather simplistic name for this classy and very elegant watch, which epitomises everything Rolex stands for: luxury, prestige, sophistication, and timeless design that can be worn practically everywhere and never look out of place

Variations to suit everyone's fancy

For example, if you favour a dressy look, then you might like the model made from 18-carat pink or white gold, with a polished bezel encircling the silver dial set with eight diamonds and two baguettes.

For a more understated look, there is a platinum model with an ice-blue dial and a domed bezel, or a similar one in white gold with a rhodium dial. It looks very cool and crisp. And if you like a dab of contrasting colour in your watch, the line has two models featuring either a black or a bright blue dial.

You will love the Day-Date if you like sleek, slender and dressy watches. It may not be the best choice for you, however, if your tastes run toward chunkier, more "substantial" models. In that case you might prefer sturdier sports watches, like the ones in Rolex's Oyster Professional line.
