Rolex Explorer

By James Montgomery

There is nothing even remotely dainty about the Rolex Explorer watch, the luxury watchmaker's tribute to the fearless adventurers who have been bravely blazing new trails and conquering the world's last frontiers.

And it is a very good thing, because who wants to climb the highest mountains, ski across Antarctica or trek to the South Pole, with a flimsy watch strapped around the wrist?

note the red GMT hand

In the tradition of Magellan, Columbus and Hillary

There is no better or more reliable watch for record setters and breakers than the no-nonsense Explorer. As its name suggests, Rolex invented this sturdy and robust stainless steel model to withstand even the most rigourous conditions of extreme expeditions. The red "GMT" hand, for example, used in conjunction with the 24-hour markings on the bezel, helps the wearer differentiate day from night.

Rolex launched the model in 1953 to coincide with the ascent of Everest in May of that year, when Sir Edmund Hillary and his guide, Tenzing Norguay, became the first men to reach the 29,000-feet (8,650 metre) summit. There is no clear evidence to suggest that either of them actually wore the watch on the grueling climb - except Rolex's own claim that they did -- but the Explorer myth was born - and it stuck.

Aviation legend Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to fly faster than sound, and Jean Troillet, one of the greatest mountain climbers, are among the Explorer's aficionados

Whom this model is designed for

You do not have to be a test pilot or an accomplished mountaineer to wear the Explorer, but if you have an affinity for adventurous fun, the watch is the perfect fit for you. However, if your only expedition is a leisurely stroll to get your favourite latte, you will probably get more enjoyment from a more refined model, such as the DateJust.

A recognisable design

Over the years Explorer remained faithful to its original design; a minimalist, clean and uncluttered look that, like the classic little black dress, never goes out of style. Easily readable black dial, stainless steel bezel, and chunky oyster bracelet is all any explorer needs in a watch. Just take it out of a drawer, dust it off, and wear it for your next cave exploration.

Forget fancy baubles. Rugged and strong, Explorer is the ideal watch for any exploit on this earth - or even beyond. Of course, you can also wear it even if your only expedition is a leisurely stroll to get your favourite latte.
