Rolex Oyster 31mm
86Rolex Oyster 31mm
The best way I can describe the Rolex Oyster 31mm line is that it is a mystery. While it is a very handsome collection, I am not sure how to peg it. In other words, I am still trying to figure out just how these watches differ from the Datejust models.
Repurposed and renamed: is it the same as a Men's Datejust?
In its "Oyster 31mm Campaign" Rolex calls these models "The man's watch women prefer." Obviously, since I am not a member of the feminine persuasion, I have no way of confirming or denying the veracity of this statement. So I will just resort to the non-committal "no comment."
Basically, the idea behind Rolex's marketing strategy is to take the men's Rolex Datejust models, pretty some of them up, and sell them as women's watches. Of course, Datejust line already has a fine ladies' collection called the Lady Datejust. Yes, but these, I suppose, are strictly for women who prefer women's watches, not for women who prefer men's watches. I hope you are following all this.
The only real difference between the Lady Datejust and Oyster 31mm I can see with a naked eye is the dial diameter. The former is 26 mm, while the latter is, like the Datejust gent's models, 31 mm. That explains the difference between the Lady Datejust and the 31mm models. The difference between men's Datejust and 31mm remains, as I already said, an enigma.

For whom the style fits...
Although this line really is a matter of perplexity to me, I shan't focus on this point any longer. Rather, let me give you an overview of some of the models.
There is quite a wide variety of watches ranging from understated to flashy. The simplest model, and thus the one I find most attractive, is in platinum with an ice-blue "concentric" dial (a series of fine circles) and a President bracelet. I do not like - since I am not a fan of glitzy watches - an 18-carat yellow gold model with diamonds on the white mother-of-pearl dial and the bezel.
As I said, the Oyster 31mm line is a bit confusing to me. After all, a Rolex Datejust is still a Datejust by any other name.

Actually, I believe the men's Datejust watches are 36mm, making the 31mm an intermediate size between the ladies' and the men's.
My Husband wanted to buy me a Rolex and I declined until I saw the 31mm ad. I liked the ladies watch but perfer something larger. I absolutely love it.
I think you're very outdated in your thinking. The small Rolex is passee because the women are buying larger watches now. I think Rolex had a great idea to come out with the 31mm and I plan to buy one.
Karen is right. I have always loved men's mechanical watches and always hated the versions made for women (bejewelled, ugh). Until I saw this size Rolex, not as ridiculously small as the Lady Datejust or as enormous as an Explorer, which is too large to borrow. I LOVE this size watch! And the publicity is just right/
How much does it coast now USD Rolex Oyster-cup of fair play Olimpic games in Sapporo 1972? Thank you.
I just got a "mid size" perpetual. I had a lady datejust, and it looked funny on my wrist and I could not read the time ! yes, I m getting old. my husband was picking up his watch from service at our ARD and i fell in love with the 31 mm oyster ss with silver dial, raised silver arabic at the 3, 6, qne 9. I5 has blue glow in the dark bars. It is a great watch and if I could just get the bracelet fit right I will thrilled with it! I not a skinny woman so the mid size looks much more in proportion to my arm and wrist. It is a Rolex without screaming Rolex. the best looking rolex i have ever seen.

For many women, especially those with thin arms and wrists, a larger watch loosely worn looks very fashionable. I have noticed the 31mm line is also more popular in Asia, where men have smaller wrists.
Finally, I believe the 31mm line offers four models that are non-date, and two that are non-date and COSC certified. That is a rarity. The other non-dates, a version of the Sub and the Explorer I, are sport models.
