With the rising cost and taxes on tobacco roll your own cigarettes are becoming a much more attractive idea for smokers. Cigarettes from the store cost an average of $5.00 to $10.00 a pack and a carton averages around $50.00 or more depending on which state or country you live. A majority of this cost is now local, state, and federal taxes.

Rolling your own cigarettes can bring the cost per pack down to a fraction of the cost and it's very easy to do. A carton of home rolled cigarettes will only cost you around $10.00 to $25.00 depending on the tobacco you buy or prefer. That's as low as $1.00 to $2.50 per pack of cigarettes! This can save the average smoker between $20.00 to $35.00 per week or more! That's $80.00 to $140.00 or more per month!

There are a lot more advantages to rolling your own cigarettes than just saving money. While tobacco in any form is not healthy RYO (roll your own) tobacco can be the lesser of two evils. Store bought cigarettes are filled with extra chemicals to preserve them, make the tobacco burn faster, and make them more addicting. Additionally, practically all store bought cigarette filter tubes have a fire retardant chemical in them to lessen the chance of fire from forgotten or dropped cigarettes. These chemicals added to store bought cigarettes can make them much more unhealthy than the ones you roll yourself. You may end up smoking much less as well as the harmful addictive chemicals get out of your body system. This ends up saving you even more money.

Average Cost of Roll Your Own Cigarette Supplies

The cost of roll your own cigarette supplies is very minimal. The cost of everything you need to buy will be made up in as little as the first week of home rolling. This is even if you buy the more costly rolling machines. There are really only 4 things you need to get started and I will list them below. All of these supplies can be purchased easily online or at your local tobacco shop. Keep in mind these prices are a broad average and will vary in whichever state or country you live.

  • Cigarette Filter Tubes - $1.85 to $3.50 per 200 to 250 count depending on the brand
  • Cigarette Injector - $6.00 to $40.00 depending on quality and model
  • Cigarette Case - $5.00 to $15.00 depending on style or brand
  • Roll Your Own Cigarette Tobacco - $15.00 to $25.00 per 6 oz depending on brand - 6 oz. bag or can makes around a carton of cigarettes
  • Smooth Pipe Tobacco - $7.00 to $15.00 per 6 oz bag - Less taxes on pipe tobacco make this a good alternative to RYO tobacco

Cigarette Filter Tubes

Cigarette filter tubes come in menthol and regular flavors as well as all the same sizes and types as store bought cigarettes. These include regulars, kings, lights, and full flavor tubes. The main difference in these tubes is usually the lengh or diameter of the cigarette portion or the length and size of the cigarette filter.

Cigarette tubes come in a large variety of brands, qualities, and prices as well. It's best to experiment around with different brands until you find one that suits your taste. In all actuality however there is very little difference in brands other than the price. As with any other product the more you purchase at once the more you save. A 200 count box is the normal minimum size purchase and this will make exactly a carton of cigarettes.

Cigarette Injectors

Cigarette injectors come in many different styles, brands, and costs Some products are made to a better quality standard and require less maintenance and cleaning. Some products are designed to be affordable and easy to use. The biggest difference in the styles is mainly the speed and ease of rolling cigarettes. Styles include;

  • Hand Cigarette Injectors
  • Cigarette Injector Machines
  • Electric Cigarette Injector Machines

Which product you choose should be based on how much effort you are willing to put into rolling as well as how much you or anyone else in your household is going to be smoking. If your a typical pack a day or less smoker a hand injector for $6.00 to $10.00 is perfect for you. Its is fairly fast and very easy to use. I also suggest this product first simply to see if you like home rolled cigarettes in the first place. If you are a heavy smoker or there are multiple smokers in your household you many want to consider purchasing a cigarette machine or electric cigarette machine. This will speed up your cigarette rolling greatly and save you time which in reality is money as well.

Cigarette Cases

If you plan on rolling your own cigarettes then you will definitely need your own custom cigarette case. These are very affordable and typically hold 20 cigarettes which is the same as a normal store bought pack. Make sure however that if you plan on rolling 100's or Kings that you buy a case that holds them properly. These typically come in many different styles and prices. If your out to save money however it is best to go with the most economical version.

These packs simply protect your cigarettes from being broken and gives you a way to carry them around conveniently. The added bonus of a cigarette case however is the fact that you will break less cigarettes than if you were using store bought soft or hard packs.

Roll Your Own Tobacco

Roll your own tobacco comes in countless brands and qualities. This type of tobacco was recently taxed by congress in 2009 and has risen in price quite dramatically. It is however still much more affordable than purchasing ready rolled cigarettes.

Loose RYO tobacco can be purchased typically anywhere tobacco is sold however there will be more of a variety at tobacco outlets. It can also be purchased from many online vendors in bulk for fairly cheap. It may be cheaper however to purchase RYO tobacco from your local tobacco store though depending on how much your state taxes are.

Typically a 3oz bag or can of tobacco will make around 90 to 100 cigarettes depending on your machine, filter tubes, and how tightly you pack the cigarettes. As with filter tubes the more tobacco you purchase at once the more money you save. Be advised however that RYO tobacco has less preservatives and chemicals than store brands. This will make it dry out very quickly so be sure to seal the bag tightly after use. One trick to preserving the tobacco is to simply place a damp clean cloth (not wet) in the bag or can with it. This will keep it from drying out over time as the tobacco will absorb the moisture from the rag.

Smooth Pipe Tobacco

Smooth pipe tobacco at the moment is a very affordable alternative to the heavily taxed roll your own tobaccos. The reason is because pipe tobacco is federally taxed at about $3.00 a pound while roll your own tobacco is taxed at about $25.00 a pound. This obviously saves you quite a large amount of money. You can purchase an entire pound of smooth pipe tobacco for $25.00 and this will make around 2 1/2 cartons of cigarettes.

Smooth pipe tobacco is typically the same as RYO tobacco except for the moisture content and the cut of the tobacco itself. You can find blends of smooth tobacco that are cut similar to cigarette tobacco though, and the extra moisture content helps preserve it if you buy more in bulk. This form of pipe tobacco does not have the aromatic blends of other pipe tobaccos and can be used in rolling. You may have to let the smooth tobacco sit out for 2 or 3 minutes before rolling it into cigarettes though to let a lot of the moisture out.

You can find a lot of blends and types of smooth pipe tobacco online. Its easy to purchase in bulk and preserve however its best to find a brand you like before making any large purchases. Online purchase of these pipe tobaccos may even be cheaper than most tobacco stores in your area.

How to Roll Your Own Cigarettes Video Guides

Many people feel that cigarette rolling is difficult and time consuming. While this may have been true 50 years ago it is far from the truth now. Depending on the machines and methods you use you can easily make a pack of cigarettes in just a matter of 15 to 20 minutes or less. This is a small price of time to pay to save a large quantity of money as well as your health.

Below I will be listing 3 of the common machines as well as videos how to use them. This will give the newcomer a lot more confidence in how easy it is to roll your own cigarettes. The order of these devices will be based on price to help you decide which is best for your needs.

Rolling Cigarettes with an Affordable Hand Injector

This is rolling a cigarette using one of the many styles of hand injectors on the market. I personally own this brand of injector and it works extremely well. As you can see in the video using a hand injector is by no means slow or difficult. You could easily roll out a pack of cigarettes very quickly and have all you need for the day. This is generally best for lighter smokers as it will be more time consuming than a machine.

Rolling Cigarettes with an Injector Machine

This is a method of rolling that is much faster and easier than using a hand injector. These cost about 5 to 10 times more than the hand injectors for this reason. The main reason these machines are faster is simply because you can hold much more tobacco in a large machine versus a hand injector. This keeps you from having to refill and tamp the tobacco down each time. This is probably the best choice for heavy smokers as they can make multiple packs of cigarettes in a very short period of time.

Rolling Cigarettes Using an Electric Injector

This is by far the fastest way to roll your own cigarettes. These machines allow you to fill them with a large amount of tobacco and with the push of a button fill your filter tubes. These machines also are adjustable so you can set them to fill your cigarettes to your preference. This can save tobacco in the long run as you are not over-packing your cigarettes.

The only downfall of these machines are the cost however. They typically run from $100. to $200 depending on the model. This cost could easily be made up in just a months time of rolling your own cigarettes. If you have the money to spend this is a good alternative. It is also good for a family where there are multiple smokers as they can all share it and make all the cigarettes they need for a few days in under 30 minutes or so.

Nice hub! I like what you have said. I have rolled my own cigarettes for about 4 years now. The price is considerably less than buying cigarettes at normal store prices. Besides that I have found that the rolling machine from Tops Brand is the easiest to use for me. I love my machine. Granted it costs about $45 dollars but was well worth the investment three years ago after the other machine kept breaking.
