Rush Limbaugh - Victim Of Reverse-Racism?
80
Rushed Away From St. Louis
Rush Limbaugh was removed from a group of bidders that are interested in purchasing the St. Louis Rams because, according to David Checketts, his "involvement in our group has become a complication and a distraction to our intentions". Rush says it is not about him, it is the “race hustlers”, “Obamaites”, and "'misreporting", "lying", "made-up quotes" and "blind hatred" from "unhappy, angry, agitated people". Last night I was enjoying the company of some of my oldest friends, I mean our friendship is old – they’re not old people. Anyway, we were playing cards when this topic was raised and my friend said that no matter how you slice it, it was reverse-racism. He said that Rush “has every right to purchase a team” and that the only thing that is standing in his way is reverse-racism. At first, I respectfully disagreed and he returned the favor. Another friend chimed in at a feverish pitch, had a soapbox moment, not allowing us to have further input, and in my attempt to be heard over him (because he was starting to get off subject) the volume and temperature of the conversation inadvertently increased. Alcohol and testosterone may have played a role, but not a key role. Most readers who follow my work know that even when I’m sober, politics and racism are hot buttons that have the ability to set me off – and it did. I value my friendship far more than politics, and hope our conversation doesn’t put a damper on that. We were friends long before either of us chose a political aisle to reside on, and far longer than Rush Limbaugh caught either of our attention. So for a disagreement about Rush to come between us, to me, would only serve as further indication of his separatist platform. All that said I would like to address “the Rush issue” and my friend without interruption, at whatever volume the reader finds suitable.
One thing that bothered me about my friend’s argument is that just like the majority of Republicans that I debate, you all say the same tired lines over and over again. It amazes me how the terminology and ideology is virtually verbatim. This only means one thing my Republican friends and associates – you’re getting this rhetoric from the exact same source. You are all spewing the same twaddle that is being fed to you by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Fox News in general. If you diversify your source of news, you will have the ability to diversify your perspective. I find myself debating the exact same article of faith over and over again – you’re like robots! It is like you are programmed to say the same lines like a GI Joe doll with a pull string coming out of your back - “it’s reverse-racism”, “socialist”, “I’m not a racist I just disagree with his policies”, “Rush was misquoted”, “every time someone disagrees with Obama you play the race card”, “black people can say anything and no one says a word” – spare me! I find it interesting that I can search YouTube for Fox News and hear every exact quote that my Republican friends recite in defense of their party, and in their criticism of so-called liberals - because that’s your sole source of information (well, that and Limbaugh). What makes it so dangerous, and so different than a Black comedian telling a joke about White people, is that you guys are considering this news, not a joke – that is far more precarious. Black people can laugh at a White comic who tells a joke about Black people, it happens all the time. It’s a fallacy that you should stop buying into, I did comedy for 8 years – trust me on this one. There are more fallacies in regards to the aforementioned commonly spewed rhetoric, and I’ll point them out as they resurface in the text.
Back to the NFL issue at hand, Rush – you’re wrong! It is not about politics, it is not about Obama, it IS about you! It is perfectly within your right to criticize Obama and any other Black person you please. You love to stride a line very close to the edge by making the most outlandish comments regarding Black people. You have made it your business to display disrespect to Black people and succeed in the face of it. It’s your shtick! You succeed despite us. Yes, you have Black fans, but Black people are not part of your target audience. If you lost every Black fan, you’d still make millions…that’s your point. I get that, and it’s your right to do all that. You have gone out of your way to damage your relationship with the average American Black person, so you and your listeners should expect resistance when you try to own some. You want to own Black athletes, and they spoke out against being owned by you. That’s not politics, that’s the monster YOU created! Don’t act surprised now. Don’t pick a fight and then cry foul when you get punched in the chin. The NFL and ESPN took a chance on you once, and you embarrassed them on national television by exposing your true colors. The NFL is a fine-tuned machine that doesn’t need shock-jock tactics to get attention. American football is a team sport, and a team works together as one – you do not display the persona of a team guy. You weren’t ousted over politics Rush, you were excluded over money.
As for my friend, and a true friend indeed, I first want to apologize for letting my emotions get the best of me, however I do stand firm against the rhetoric you’re blindly accepting from Fox News and the Rushites. Our disagreement started when you said it was reverse-racism…FALACY! Think about that statement for a minute, and truly think in your heart how you define “reverse-racism”. One might say “If racism is reversed, that would mean there is none”, another might say “racism reversed is msicar, and that’s not a real word”. A less sarcastic person might say “reverse-racism is when a Black person carries out a racist act against a White person”. Is that what happened here? Before I address that, you also said that Rush has “every right to purchase a team”. Does he really? He has the right to bid on a team, and he’s not been denied that right. He can still bid on a team, just not with David Checketts’ group. See Rush isn’t the only one with rights here. Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner, also has rights, including the right to deny ownership. Let’s be very clear, Rush wasn’t buying the team, he was part of a group that is putting in their bid to buy a team. This group isn’t guaranteed to win the bid with or without Rush, because it is NOT their right to own the team. Goodell has the right to choose which bidder will win the privilege of owning a team. Is it right to deny ownership because of race? Of course not, but do you honestly believe Rush was denied because he is White? I don’t. I think Rush was booted from the group because they realized that the tension he created between himself and the Black community at large was making it harder for them to win a bid – in fact, it was likely going to play a major role in the denial of their bid. In short, his reputation was quite simply bad for business. If you had to guess, what percentage of Black people do you think are in the group who ousted Rush? David Checketts, who made the announcement, also owns the St. Louis Blues (a professional hockey team). If you had to guess, would you say he’s Black or White? Yes there were rumbles from Black players who basically said “I will not be owned by Rush Limbaugh”, a few prominent Black figures that spoke against the move (including the president of the NFL players union), and of course Al “Mr. Do” Sharpton graced us with his ever-loving presence. They all have the right to those stances as well. Beyond all that noise what you had was a group of White people, realizing that another group of White people will likely deny their bid if they included this White guy – so they cut him loose. So I ask again, if you agree with the notion that “reverse-racism is when a Black person carries out a racist act against a White person”, is that really what happened here?
When I said to my friend that Rush was known for making offensive remarks, he told me that Rush was misquoted and asked me to cite the remarks. I cited the infamous remark he made about Donovan McNabb – he conceded. I cited the airing of “Barack the Magic Negro” – he said “that’s not racist”. I got so caught up in that response that I neglected to mention the comment that Colin Powell’s endorsement of Obama was all about race (which he likely would have said was not racist), and the comment that Obama is president because of “stupid, ignorant people”. For the sake of argument, let’s say that none of these comments are racist. Doesn’t it still stand to reason that there will be some Black people that take offense to that point of view? Is it unreasonable for a Black man to consider those remarks and think “I don’t want to be owned by this guy”? I visited YouTube today and searched Fox News to see where my friend was going with the “misquote” argument, and sure enough there it was…a 10 minute Bill O’Reilly video having that very conversation. Bill played a clip from an interview with Drew Sharp, a sportswriter for the Detroit Free Press who is known for saying anything to get a rise out of someone. Drew referenced Rush’s controversial sound clips and was asked (just as I was asked) to cite one, and Drew cited a comment regarding the NAACP. Bill said research has yet to find that quote and basically asked Drew to prove it, and Drew choked – stumbled on his words, ate them, and choked on them. The clip was then cut off as Bill went on to banter about Drew’s comment with friendly fire shooting interviewees. Drew was suddenly referred to as “they”, as to imply that he spoke for every media outlet outside of Fox Republican Network television. I guess my friend thought I would be as careless as Drew was, or that Drew was my sole source of information…but no.
I used to work for a guy named Earl, who was one of the smartest and most powerful Black men in the American automotive industry. I learned a lot from Earl. However, I made one disturbing discovery about him, one that someone eventually exploited and led him to his eventual demise. I discovered that as long as you agree with Earl, he will buy anything you sell. There used to be a joke in the office that an Earl meeting went like this:
Employee 1: That’s a great idea Mr. Earl.
Earl: Who is that guy? He’s smart. I like that guy. Give him a raise.
Employee 2: Actually Mr. Earl, I think we would do better if we did things this way.
Earl: Who is that guy? He’s fired!
A day finally came when the joke was on us, and someone exploited his desire to be agreed with. Quite frankly, it took the dumbest person with the lowest self-esteem to stoop lower than any self-respecting human being would to satisfy his need to be authoritative. She did horrible work, she started trouble galore, she couldn’t spell, yet she was paid more than everyone, could get anyone fired at the drop of a dime, and eventually suckered him into marriage. Why? Because she agreed with everything he said, and spewed his rhetoric as if it were her own. Are you still searching for relevance? Republicans tend to encompass this same desire, this desire to be better than others, to be smarter, to be more powerful than their peers, and all it takes is for someone to feed that desire and they will have the right to feed you anything. As long as they make you believe you’re king, you’ll buy anything they sell, believe anything they say, and that is how they’ve turned you into robots. They say “you’re smarter than them, you’re better than them, because you know that (enter whatever you please)”, suddenly you trust that parenthesized “whatever” because you were led to believe that it makes you better than me. It only makes you manipulated by idiom. That is why brilliant minds are being wasted spewing repetitive drivel and believing they are speaking their own mind. Diversify your input. A friend once told me that the further right you go politically, the closer you are to being in line with scripture. I believe someone is exploiting his spiritual passion for political gain. Scripture says that no man is perfect, and in return no man is perfectly imperfect. If that is true for individuals, it is also true for a group of individuals. So when the Rushites feed you oratory that says Republicans are right 100% of the times, and Democrats are wrong 100% of the times – that is far from being in line with scripture…in fact, it’s downright blasphemous. Scripture says the only perfect being to ever walk this earth was Jesus. So when the Rushites declare themselves perfect, are they ordaining themselves to be God, God-like, or the second coming? There is a reason why the Rushites teach you that anyone who doesn’t agree with them 100% of the time is being unfair or biased against them. Do a little research on the term “God Complex”, and give it some real honest thought, and please – use your own mind in the process.

Most of us haven't heard of this comic, but listen to what he has to say. It is a fallacy that every time a White person says something regarding race we claim they are racist. Wouldn't this guy be a poster child if that were true?

Thanks for the feedback Karkita...and remind me to be nice to you. WOW! I love the passion!
I couldn't agree more (and I actually read word for word versus my usual scan of every other word). I'm just awaiting his next publicity stunt and the controversy that will spark as a result.
Fox News is trying to get him to file suit over this NFL situation, that would be a nice publicity stunt for him so I'm totally expecting it to come to pass.
I think that it,s kind of funny that Rush was not a victim of racism but a victim of the free market. His presence in the group was not a good marketing decision. Therefore he was denied a position. That's just a wise business move. He trumpets free market capitalism every day and now he cries foul when the market decides against him!
Ay Ay Mr. Taylor - I find that an interesting twist as well.
You couldn't be more on point...!
I'm glad I came over to check out your work. You are an excellent writer. I particularly like the expression "It only makes you manipulated by idiom." Can't wait to read more of your hubs.
T_: One Christmas I signed my cards, "Katy, the Liberal Lunatic from Minnesota," as I was proudly labeled when I called in to tell Rush Limbaugh he dupes the masses and is more criminal than the criminals he was talking about that particular day. Iiiiii, I don't understand how one soul can listen to his illogical rants. I don't know about buying of baseball teams. All I need to know of his racism, classism, and any other -ism is his persistent use of "Femi-nazi" for any woman who stands up for rights. You are exactly right about idioms and metaphors. Dr. George Lakoff,("Don't Think of an Elephant") professor of cognitive linguistics at Berkeley addresses the metaphors used by the right to frame debates and that are inadvertently perpetuated by the media and us! You might like the Hub pertaining to Lakoff: "How to Confront Rush" http://hubpages.com/hub/confrontrush

Ken, Good to see you my brotha - thanks for checking out the hub.
Liam: You too are the very talented writer, thanks for the compliment. As you know, I've visited and enjoyed your work as well. This is a little more long-winded than my average hub, I just hope not too long.
Katy: I love your passion! Wow! I was expecting a lot more Rush supporters to attack me or come to his defense, so far that hasn't happened. I just keep getting passionate remarks from those that see him for what he is.
Tiffany: my hubs?
No, there is no reverse racism involved in the outsing of Rush Limbaugh from the group of investors assembled to bid on the Rams.
As Mr. Tayor above wrote, a business decision, and a smart one.
Rush Limbaugh has managed to make a career out of hiding behind a microphone and spewing off color retoric whenever it suits his fancy. He has capitalized off of self perpetuated racial, political, and social flare ups that for the most part in realtity are only exsistent because he speaks them. His latest claim is a prime example of that.
His reckless verbiage and inciteful platform has finally tripped him up and he doesn't like it.
Well I guess he's just going to have to suck it up. He wrote this check all the while depleting the funds that would have made it good, through his reckless, and demeaning
direction he chose to take.
The investors sent him a message he should have been getting all along.....He's just a self proclaimed expert on nothing that lucked up on an audience that obviously can't find their way back to Howard Stern.
Geo Gill
GeoGee: Thanks for the feedback. You're right on point, but I like that line, "He's just a self proclaimed expert on nothing that lucked up on an audience that obviously can't find their way back to Howard Stern." LOL Nice!
Rush is of all things, not a victim. Certainly not a victim of reverse racism. The NFL is into mass marketing. They didn't want some one polarizing in their organization. Can't say I blame them. I mean Jimmy the Greek and Howard Cosell were run out of the organization for a single statement. Wether or not he is mis-quoted or mis interpreted as racist is not the issue. The issue is he is contreversial. The NFL wants owners with deep pockets, stable family lives and tight lips. Rush just has deep pockets. He's a bad fit.
I would like to invite all my readers to visit CJ's hub so that you can see he is not some "liberal" out to attack Rush. I appreciate the feedback CJ.
I agree that the Rush Limbaugh situation is about him, himself - not reverse racism.
What I don't entirely agree with is the idea that Conservatives (or Conservative-leaning people) are echoing what they hear from "the usual media suspects". While I've never listened to Glen Beck, and while Conservatives I know think Sean Hannity is too much of a "piler-on" (even for them); much of what media Conservatives say (at least that which isn't "piling on" or "over-the-top") is actually echoing the beliefs of listeners/views - not the other way around. That's why they have a following. What may happen is people may refer to what someone on the radio/tv said as a way to "back up" his own beliefs; but, for the most part, those media folks have their following because they echo what so many Conservatives believe.
That may not help ease "strains" between you and your Conservative friend, of course. I don't know what you'd consider worse - a friend who echoes people like Rush Limbaugh or a friend who actually believes Conservative ideas on his own. :)
Thanks for the feedback Lisa.
First, I feel confident that the tension between my friend and I will heal with time. We've been friends forever, and have already talked about this briefly. It doesn't matter to me if he's a fan of Rush, if he's Republican, Independent Conservative, Democrat - that's all hogwash to me when comes to comparing politics to friendship. No comparison.
At least you and I are in agreement on the Rush vs the NFL issue. It gives me hope when I can actually get objective conversation from Conservatives.
Regarding the meat of your comment, I can respect that opinion, and there may be merit to it. Hard to argue, and certainly not a position I can positively stand firm against. It's sort of like the age old "chicken or the egg" question.
Just stopped back to see how the conversation is going - I love it when Rush gets called out for what he is! Glad to see people are engaged! Kartika
Wow! Good read. Rush as I say on another post Rush who? is to be ignored for the EVIl and LIES that he spews. No reverse racism here, only his big bad mouth and stinky attitude:)
WOW!!! This is exactly what needed to be said. Rush, made his own bed. Now, he doesn't want to lay in it.
Thanks for the comments!
Karkita: It has been a surprisingly low resistance to the topic at hand. Seems even Rush fans believe it was a good business decision.
DynamicS: LOL - yes his big mouth backfired this time.
acanderson: "Rush, made his own bed. Now, he doesn't want to lay in it." BAM - you hit the nail on the head.
I really enjoyed this Hub because it told the truth which cannot be denied. Your writing and facts presented are outstanding. One of the best writings I've read on Hubpages. A thumbs up to you! I am going to bookmark this one for sure.
Thanks for the compliment laringo! I appreciate the feedback. With comments like that, you are always welcome! :D
My husband listens to Rush LImbaugh program everyday without fail. I hope he sees your comment. I agree with what you say.
Thank you for the article.
J.
Thanks for the feedback healthgoji. Rush is very entertaining, so I understand the "fandom". :D Please share this hub with him, guide him to it, the Rushites have been sorely under-represented on this hub.
Hi T.
I was expecting more pro-Rush comments here. People don't always distinguish opinion from journalism. When you rely on somebody else to do the interpreting for you, you lose the ability to think on your own.
I like Jerry Taylor's remark on the subject.
Regarding reverse racism: I've always viewed that term differently than most others it seems. When a black person carries out a racist act against a white person, that is just plain racism to me. It's a two way street.
To explain my own interpretation, I'll use affirmative action as an example. Using effort to lift somebody up instead of using effort to put somebody down. It's the opposite of racism.
Set me straight on this? I think I've got my terminology mixed up.
This is another high quality hub. ;) thanks!
Jen
Hi Jen and thanks for the feedback!
If you ever had a chance to meet him, you'd like Jerry Taylor in general...he's a real lady's man. :D
Your interpretation of reverse racism as "Using effort to lift somebody up instead of using effort to put somebody down." is actually a VERY interesting take. I can't claim to be an expert on reverse-racism, because like you I've always just called racism what it is - racism. Regardless who commits the act of racism. I thought the term derived from the old adage (or excuse) that "Black people can't be racist, because you have to have a certain amount of power..." blah blah blah. I bought that theory for a time, then wised up against it after hearing that excuse used by Black people to justify some of the most outrageous racially charged comments known to man.
Thanks for that food for thought! Sorry I can't set you straight, because I can't say with confidence that I'm not the one thinking wiggly.
Rush Limbaugh is a victim of Rush Limbaugh: "Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons," Limbaugh stated. "There, I said it." Then he tried to explained "NFL Bloods and Crips, Explained: It Was All About Love of the Game" http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_101409 "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well"- quoted from "Dittohead Blues" in the LA Weekly (October 9, 2003. Nice hub!
Thanks for the feedback dashingclaire! I've heard the "Bloods & Crips" comment too, he's always making out of the way comments. His audience expects it, and he thrives on it. Now they are all up in arms because his own crap jumped up and bit him in the backside!
Bravo, once again, T.
I am in complete agreement that the NFL could do without an owner like Rush for all the reasons stated above.
Besides, anyone who remembers Marge Schott (of Cincinnati Reds infamy) can already see coming the public relations nightmare he would cause for professional sports in general, let alone the NFL and the Rams.
Rush made mention that the backlash was an illustration of, "Obama's America on full display," whatever that happens to mean to him. Conversely, I believe his involvement in professional sports ownership on any level would evoke the very divisive and polarizing ghosts of a largely bygone era in professional sports.
This doesn't mean that I believe professional sports is free of any sort of discrimination today, but I think that a willing association to a known bigot would taint that part of the game by extension that lets all enjoy it together, regardless to political, ethnic, racial, religious or any other differences.
I think Rush should stick to being a loud, arrogant, bigoted windbag in one venue at a time.
hahaha thanks for the feedback guys! I am truly surprised, and honestly disappointed that none of the Rushites came to his defense on this thread. I find that very telling.
As your friend said, Rush has every right to purchase a team. And the owners and the league have every right not to sell him one!
What goes around comes around. Rush got just what he deserves.
Great hub, BTW!
In"deed" Ralph! :D Rush is not the only one with rights here, that's the root of fallacy he's selling his fans.
I like football and there is no doubt that Rush is Wrong for football.
Thanks for the feedback GNelson!
Hello again T_Augustus,
I agree with you on the issue of your friends parroting back Rush, Sean and other personalities. They don't call Rush's followers Ditto Heads for nothing.
I don't think however that this is limited to Republicans. As you know, I think both parties are bad for this country. Neither of them has served the people well in the last seventy years.
As for the reverse racism issue, I think it might be discrimination but just because Rush is a celebrity that has a strong like or dislike. All of these talk show politicians a much too highly regarded by their followers. I personally don't understand the attraction.
Professional men's sports are out of control today, when the owner with the most money spent on his or her team does the best. In baseball this would be the Yankees. It is like playing Monopoly when one player can start off with hotels on their property. It is hard for the rest of the players to win.
While I am on the sports topic, how about a new system for payroll. Every full time player gets the same money every day. The big paycheck would be if the team win their series or conference etc. So the super stars would still get their large checks but it would be based on their record for the season. Each position would be held by the top player for any time period. Each team in the league would have the same pay structure so it wouldn't make players jump teams for more cash. This would also apply to the team coaches and manager. It would be a total team effort to mazimize your paycheck.
The part time or backup players would be on a lower scale, just as if they were in the minor league or such.
Not a brilliant idea, but what the hey.

Thank god Limbaugh can't buy the Rams! What a disgrace that would be - he is divisive and mean spirited and is racist - his remarks speak for themselves if anyone is listening. The reverse racism rhetoric is twisted - it's just a way the wing nuts and lunatic fringe have of riling up the base and discrediting people who are calling them out on their own hate speech. Limbaugh is a parasite, feeding off fear and hatred. Kartika
