OVERCOMING THE KINGS OF CANAAN - PART 3

You will remember that last week we looked at the introduction of the 31 Kings that was slain by Joshua and Moses as a foreshadow and picture of both our personal walk with God as well as the journey of the Church and the Kingdom of God manifested.

Jos 12:8-24

(8) In the hill country, in the lowland, in the Arabah, on the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the Negeb--the lands of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites:

(9) The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;

(10) The king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;

(11) The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

(12) The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

(13) The king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;

(14) The king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;

(15) The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

(16) The king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;

(22) The king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;

(23) The king of Dor in the heights of Dor, one; the king of Goiim in Gilgal, one;

(24) The king of Tirzah, one. In all, thirty-one kings.

•11. The king of Hormah

H2767 - BDB Definition:

Hormah (meaning "broken rock", "banned", or "devoted to destruction"),

1) a town of the Canaanites, conquered by Joshua, allotted to Judah, and located in the south of Judah

The root of this word is:

H2763 - châram - BDB Definition:

1) to ban, devote, destroy utterly, completely destroy, dedicate for destruction, exterminate

1b1) to be put under the ban, be devoted to destruction

1b2) to be devoted, be forfeited

1b3) to be completely destroyed

2) to split, slit, mutilate (a part of the body)

Surrendering something to God meant devoting it to the service of God or putting it under a ban for utter destruction.

This is the place where the self will and own mindsets is placed under the ban of utter destruction. This is the place where I step into the dimension of coming the a place of brokenness in my walk with God. I no longer have my own thought, mind or emotions or will. My focus is to live from the spirit. I think God's thoughts, experience the heart of God and the mind of God in all that I do, meet and think. His will now becomes my will.

Thus we see we need to come to this place in our walk with God not only on a personal level but also as a Household of Faith.

I believe as a Household God has brought is in our journey to Hormah. The place of devotion and intimacy with God. Looking at the past two months of the WORD that God has been speaking to us it is clear that He is serious about us as a household to move to a place of INTIMACY with HIM.

We need also to understand that we cannot move on to overcome the next city if we have not dealt with the previous city. If we stand back we will see a pattern emerge that is constantly progressive and indicative of our walk with GOD.

•12. The king of Arad

H6166

ערד

‛ărâd

ar-awd'

From an unused root meaning to sequester itself; fugitive; Arad, the name of a place near Palestine, also of a Canaanite and an Israelite: - Arad.

Sequester

SEQUES'TER, v.t. [L. sequestro, to sever or separate, to put into the hands of and indifferent person, as a deposit; sequester, belonging to mediation or umpirage, and as a noun an umpire, referee, midiator. This word is probably a compound of se and the root of quaestus, quaesitus, sought. See Question.]

1. To separate from the owner for a time; to seize or take possession of some property which belongs to another, and hold it till the profits have paid the demand for which it is taken.

2. To take from parties in controversy and put into the possession of an indifferent person.

3. To put aside; to remove; to separate; from other things.

4. To sequester one's self, to separate one's self from society; to withdraw or retire; to seclude one's self for the sake of privacy or solitude; as, to sequester one's self from action.

5. To cause to retire or withdraw into obscurity.

When I read this word I was really confused for a moment and thought that I have missed something somewhere.

However when I had a look at the dictionary three distinct meanings were revealed. Allow me a moment to present these three to you and then to elaborate upon each one of them.

SEQUES'TER:

  • I. To put somebody into isolation - to put somebody in an isolated or lonely place away from other people, the pressures of everyday life, or possible disturbances
  • II. To take property to cover obligation - to take legal possession of somebody's property temporarily until a debt that person owes is paid, a dispute is settled, or a court order is obeyed
  • III. Take an enemy's property - to demand or seize the property of an enemy

ISOLATION

This is one of the strongholds in the soul dimension that we need to overcome. This is where we need to grow to a place where we no longer depend on people for acceptance and feeling good about ourselves. It is also the place of separation unto God. This is the place where we press into the garden of solitude with God in our relationship with Him. This is where we learn to allow Him to become our lover and the lover of our soul. This is also the place where we learn to isolate ourselves to the extent that we can experience His love and presence for who and what He is.

This is you closet. You Secret place where you meet with the most High God.

TAKE LEGAL POSSESSION:

This is also where we embrace the Kingdom of God. This is where we move from understanding in our minds and intellect our position in the Kingdom and where we move to a place of where we actually take ownership of the Kingdom of God and the administration of the Kingdom. This is where we execute the new will and testament of the Father. We step into the dimension of administrating the Estate of the Father

TAKE THE ENEMY'S PROPERTY

This is where we not only now take ownership of the matters of the Kingdom but also where we actively engage the enemy in taking back from him what he has stolen from us and the Father in this world.

Again we see the demand for the need for each one of us to walk in our inheritance and dominion that was given to us in Christ.

H6166 - BDB Definition:

Arad = "a wild ass"

1) a Benjamite, son of Beriah, who drove out the inhabitants of Gath (noun proper masculine)

2) a royal city of the Canaanites north of the wilderness of Judah (noun proper locative)

This is the wilderness experience in Judah. Stepping into the third day dimension. With Reference to Gath which means WINE PRESS

This is the place where the wine is being pressed. Remember that we said before that the wine is in the cluster. This is where we are pressed to become the new wine.

•13. The king of Libnah

H3841 - BDB Definition:

Libnah = "pavement"

1) a royal city of the Canaanites in the southwest captured by Joshua; allocated to Judah and made a Levitical city; site unknown

  • This speaks of a path or pathway.
  • A paved path for pedestrians alongside a street.

We now become a pavement, a way leading others who are alongside the road into the place of accuracy in Christ.

This is where we now come to a place of maturity in Christ where we can say to others follow me as I follow Christ.

•14. The king of Adullam

H5725 - Adullam, a town in the low-lying hills of the Shephelah that the Israelites conquered (Jos_12:15) and allotted to the tribe of Judah (Jos_15:35). Later, David fled there to hide from Saul (1Sa_22:1; 2Sa_23:13). Assyria captured it (Mic_1:15) much later. Exiles returning from the Babylonian exile reestablished the city (Neh_11:30).

As we preach and teach, we must be aware that many to whom we speak are ready to throw in the towel. In fact, we are also often at that point. We must remind ourselves and those with whom we are communicating to hang in there. We will prevail-not because we are tough but because we are on God's side. To the one extent this is also a place of hiding where we hide from persecution from the worldly systems. But it is also where we can cut away the mantle of the King of this World and coming to a place of understanding that God has given us a place and position of power.

This is a place of hiding from the Saul structures. Place where you are protected from the soulish and worldly leaders. It is a place where we now rule and reign with Christ. Judah has now taken possession of this land and we rule and reign over our soul dimension.

Place of Shepherds. This is also a cave where Joshua executed five of the kings. It speaks again of a place where you are accurately shepherded to come to a place of maturity and victory over the self-life and also being grown to maturity. It also speaks to us of coming to a place where we become shepherds and leaders.

•19. The king of Aphek

BDB Definition:

Aphek or Aphik = "enclosure"

This word also carries the meaning of being in a corral and to corral. Speaks of a circle of defense but also to gather together and to take control of people. Thus we see a move towards leadership taking place.

It speaks of the mobilization of people in a defensive circle. I believe this is also a place of where we step into the dimension of being a gatekeeper and intercessor on the level of giving direction and purpose to the defense.

Another meaning as a verb indicates the action to gather together and to take control of people or things.

H662 - Root of this word is APHAK

ָאַפק

'āp̱aq: A verb meaning to hold back, restrain oneself, be compelled. The word depicts self-control (Gen_43:31; Gen_45:1; Est_5:10). It means to make oneself do something (1Sa_13:12). It depicts the Lord's self-control (Isa_42:14; Isa_63:15; Isa_64:12 [11]).

Isa 42:14

(14) [Thus says the Lord] I have for a long time held My peace, I have been still and restrained Myself. Now I will cry out like a woman in travail, I will gasp and pant together.

Isa 64:12

(12) Considering these [calamities], will You restrain Yourself, O Lord [and not come to our aid]? Will You keep silent and not command our deliverance but humble and afflict us exceedingly?

These scriptures speaks of the constraints of God. It is a place where we are not moved by humanism and our soul life. We restrain ourselves to only move as and when God commands us to move.

SHARE VISION OF THE HARNESS OF BILL BRITTON

•21. The king of Madon

H4068

מדון

mâdôn

BDB Definition:

Madon = "strife"

Conflict. Discord. Contention. Fighting. Dissension. Friction. Rivalry.

Place where we as individuals and also as a corporate body needs to overcome strife. Looking at the previous area where we have become fruitful it is now so easy to step into a dimension of competition with the father of the House and to start to strife to proof myself in order to be launched into my own ministry.

This is a stronghold that we need to deal with ruthlessly in our life.

This is also a place in our walk as a Household where we might come to a place of strife in the ministry. This is something that must not be allowed to fested or manifest at all.

We also need to understand that having overcome the previous King of Lasharon it is so easy now to become placid and try to function from a position of strength within yourself and try to accomplish the purposes of God through your own personal strength and striving.

Jos 11:1

(1) When Jabin king of Hazor heard of this, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph,

Speaks of the following:

NAPHTALI - DELIVERANCE ANOINTING

Gen 49:21 Naphtali is a hind let loose which yields lovely fawns.

Naphtali is a deliverance anointing; it is a hind let loose; it is a deer that has been caged up but it is an anointing to set that deer free.

God has brought you here with one purpose only and that is to bring you in your walk with Him to that place where the fullness of the Christ in you is released and where you step into your destiny and calling.

This is where you will grow to become all that God has called you to be.

I also believe that this is the place where we will step into our destiny. You will respond to that Word that God has spoken over your life.

mārā': I. A verb meaning to fly, to propel with wings. It refers to the ability to travel without touching the ground. It is used figuratively of the ostrich (Job_39:18), a wonder of God's creation.

The combination of the two words bring about a very interesting concept. You have a guardian that propels someone to a place of flight.

I want to put on my free interpretation glasses if you would allow me to do so and say that we have here a picture of us having come to a place where we give momentum and training to fathers. A release and support of young father as they continue to rise to the challenges of sonship in becoming a spiritual father.

Part of Speech: noun proper locative

A Related Word by BDB/Strong's Number: of uncertain derivation

Manasseh

Hebrew: nashshani, meaning: who makes to forget. "God hath made me forget"

The tribe of Manasseh was associated with that of Ephraim and Benjamin during the wanderings in the wilderness.

The history of the tribe contains a sad record of a desolating civil war in which they were engaged with the other eleven tribes. By it they were almost exterminated (Judg. 20:20, 21; 21:10). (See GIBEAH.)

The first king of the Jews was Saul, a Benjamite. A close Alliance was formed between this tribe and that of Judah in the time of David (2 Sam. 19:16, 17), which continued after his death (1 Kings 11:13; 12:20). After the Exile these two tribes formed the great body of the Jewish nation (Ezra 1:5; 10:9).

The tribe of Benjamin was famous for its archers (1 Sam. 20:20, 36; 2 Sam. 1:22; 1 Chr. 8:40; 12:2) and slingers (Judge. 20:6).

"When evil dominates society as it did at Megiddo, it's a wake-up call for Christians to fight for righteousness."

This is where we do not allow man and humanism to have any control over what we think live and do. This is also a place of constant warfare between the spirit and the soul life that are being lived.

(19) They shall call the people unto Mount [Carmel]; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness, for they shall suck the abundance of the seas and the treasures hid in the sand.

This is the place where we walk in the abundance of God and where we are required to bring sacrifices of righteousness.

This is a place where you will be called to walk in righteousness although a lot of unrighteousness might be brought against you. Both Renette and I can testify of these periods and times in our lives where we had to bring offerings of righteousness to God. But it is also a place of where we see the abundance of God manifested in our lives.

•28. The king of Jokneam in Carmel

Jokneam

Meaning: gathered by the people

H3760 - BDB Definition:

Carmel = "garden-land"

Jokneam means - "gathering of the people"

Carmel means - "garden."

"Jokneam in Carmel" - When we substitute the meaning of both of these places, we have the following very clear and confirming statement - "gathering of the people in the garden"

This is symbolic of the return to the Garden of Eden before the Fall.

We see here the complete restoration of the order of God of man in the Garden of Eden. Symbolicly we see that this is speaking of the restoration of the Kingdom of God in the earth as it was at the time in the Garden of Eden.

•30. The king of Goiim in Gilgal

H1471 - BDB Definition:

1) nation, people (noun masculine)

1a) nation, people

1a1) usually of non-Hebrew people

1a2) of descendants of Abraham

1a3) of Israel

1b) of swarm of locusts, other animals (figuratively)

1c) Goyim? = "nations" (noun proper masculine)

GOIIM

(gawi' ihm) Proper name meaning, "nation," particularly a "Gentile, foreign nation."

GILGAL

Place name meaning, "circle," and probably referring to a circle of stones or a circular altar. Such a circle of stones could be found almost anywhere in Palestine and led easily to naming towns "Gilgal." The many references to Gilgal in the Old Testament cannot thus be definitely connected to the same town, since several different Gilgals may well have existed.

1. Gilgal is most closely associated with Joshua, but the number of Gilgals involved continues an unsolved question. After crossing the Jordan, Joshua established the first camp at Gilgal (Joshua 4:19).

Jos 4:19-24

(19) And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and encamped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho.

(20) And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan Joshua set up in Gilgal.

(21) And he said to the Israelites, When your children ask their fathers in time to come, What do these stones mean?

(22) You shall let your children know, Israel came over this Jordan on dry ground.

(23) For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up for us until we passed over,

(24) That all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty and that you may reverence and fear the Lord your God forever.

There Joshua took twelve stones from the bed of the river to set up a memorial for the miraculous crossing. Gilgal, the first foothold on Palestinian soil, became Israel's first worship place, where they were circumcised and observed the Passover. There God appeared to Joshua and affirmed his mission (Joshua 5:1).

This Gilgal apparently became Israel's military base of operations (Joshua 9:6; Joshua 10:6; Joshua 14:6), though some scholars would identify this with a Gilgal farther north near Shechem.

Ehud, the judge, passed Gilgal in his mission to slay the king of Moab (Judges 3:19,Judges 3:26).

David passed through Gilgal as he fled from Absalom (2 Samuel 19:15,2 Samuel 19:40).

Gilgal was also one of the three places where Samuel annually held circuit court (1 Samuel 7:16).

Saul was both crowned and rejected as king at Gilgal (1 Samuel 11:14-15; 1 Samuel 13:14-15).

Gilgal established itself as a major place of worship for Israel with ancient traditions. However, it also permitted worship associated with other gods and became the object of prophetic judgment (Hosea 4:15; Amos 4:4; Amos 5:5).

From all this we see that Gilgal is a place of circumcision, of Worship and of covenant.

I believe that this is symbolic of the Judgement of God upon the nations. Those that are not from Israel that will take place here. It is significant that it only follows after the establishment of the dominion of the Kingdom of God. I believe that there is still very much to be unpacked in this pattern with regards to all these kings.

•31. The king of Tirzah

H8656

תּרצה

tirtsâh

teer-tsaw'

From H7521; delightsomeness; Tirtsah, a place in Palestine; also an Israelitess: - also an Israelitess: - Tirzah.

TIRZAH

(tuhr' zuh) Personal and place name meaning, "she is friendly."

This is very interesting as I believe we see here the reference to the Bride of Christ. The word Israelitess speaks of a female Israelite

It is also number 31 which implies Diety which complies completion in Christ. It also denotes unity and we see the manifestation of the Bride and the Church in Unity with God becoming ONE.

THIRTY-ONE

The Hebrew expression of this is l), El, the name of God, and its signification as a number or factor would be Deity.

THIRTY AND ONE

Some interesting thoughts to further ponder:

THIRTY

being 3 x 10, denotes in a higher degree the perfection of Divine order, as marking the right moment. CHRIST was thirty years of age at the commencement of His ministry, Luke 3:23.

JOSEPH, His type, was the same age, Genesis 41:46.

DAVID also, when he began to reign, 2 Samuel 5:4.

The Number ONE (1)

There can be no doubt as to the significance of this primary number. In all languages it is the symbol of unity. As a cardinal number it denotes unity; as an ordinal it denotes primacy. Unity being indivisible, and not made up of other numbers, is therefore independent of all others, and is the source of all others. So with the Deity. The great First Cause is independent of all. All stand in need of Him, and He needs no assistance from any. "One" excludes all difference, for there is no second with which it can either harmonise or conflict.
