The devastation brought about by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng taught the Filipinos a lot of lessons on preparedness or awareness. It made the Filipinos prepare for the worst next time. I have some friends who told me that they have been preparing for another typhoon, Ramil, which is a super typhoon. They bought canned goods and rice and other necessities and put them in handy bags. They bought inflatable boats, sturdy ropes, and additional heavy-duty flash lights. But these are simple things that are easy to take care of. What about the cars and the other vehicles?

If it happened for the first time that your car drifted on the floodwater, I think it is best to plan on what to do with your car or your vehicle the next time the ferocious floodwater come again.

When a vehicle is submerged in water, it would be difficult to make it function again, or it would make you spend so much in detailing and overhauling. Therefore we need to –

  1. Always monitor through the television and radio or from the internet updates on the weather condition to prepare for the flood.
  2. If warnings were given about the inevitability of flood waters to visit again, immediately transfer the car or the vehicle to higher grounds. Increasing the level of your garage can also be considered. Avoid parking your car in places that can possibly be flooded. Parking areas with fees are great places to park the car or the vehicle.
  3. Avoid driving or traveling when the weather is bad and possible flooding will occur. It is very dangerous to meet the flood waters on the highways because it can threaten your safety and your life. If flood is along the roads and highways where you will pass, go to a secured or safe place to park your car and to take yourself to safety.
  4. Wait until the flood subside and danger is less before deciding to drive again. While there are still floodwater around, listen to the radio or the television to get the recent information on the flooded areas.

As cliche as it sounds, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound a cure. Do your best to save your cars before the floods came
