SEO Content writing - Things I should have thought before
53SEO content writing is not a big deal. The challenge lies in seducing readers and holding their interest till the end of the copy. Why just SEO content writing, the prospect of finding audience and arresting them with the copy can drive daylight out of any writer. Be it a news reporter, advertising copywriter or an author.
What makes a writer nervous about SEO content writing?
The first thing could be competition. Strike a query in Google and you will find millions of pages at your disposal. You have to cut across this million to make your content available to the reader.
Your competition is your reader’s option. Your reader now has millions of options to choose from unlike the newspapers or the books. His quality parameter will be set higher and expectation would simply escalate.
The fact that the internet users tend to be more erratic could pose a serious threat to any writer. Even if you manage to tempt someone with a compelling headline, it would be difficult to bind him to your copy unless he finds it very interesting. An internet browser wanders off from a web page in just 2 seconds. That gives you just two seconds to shoot your best.
Keeping all the above factors in mind, the thought of writing for the internet audience can make any one uncomfortable. Let’s say your determination is intact and you are all set carve your niche in internet. Great! It’s time to introduce SEO into your content.
After writing an interesting piece, you have to make it dance around the keywords. Your SEO content has to be a smooth and graceful enough to attract readers as well as spiders. It’s kind of a razor’s edge. A lesser blend of keywords can rob the SEO factor out of your copy. A higher blend of keywords can turn the spiders off and earn you a lifetime penalty.
This article never intended to inject SEO content phobia into you. It’s rather a reminder of the challenges that come your way, when you write content for internet audience. You can take the challenge in your stride, if you are aware of it beforehand.
A quick solution to the above problems is as follows
- Intense research before creating the content.
- Understanding the psyche of your target audience
- Crafting an interesting headline
- Keeping the same interest continued in the opening paragraph.
- Jumping on to the point in the subsequent paragraphs and presenting quickly whatever you have to offer
- Offering the content you have promised in your headline
- Substituting some normal words with keywords, wherever you think it would fit in without a crease. Limit your keyword blend from 3% to 6%
These are the things about SEO content writing I should have thought, before I blindly jumped into this glamorous job. But now that I have known, it’s no more daunting for me.

Good piece. I have some questions, though. You mentioned "Intense research" as a quick solution to overcoming SEO content phobia. How intense should this research be, and how should one cut down on being overwhelmed by information?
Also, I've heard that some online content producers skip research (in the sense of finding topic-relevant sources and coming up with original content) and opt to 'spin' articles. I'm not sure that kind of writing has, as you mentioned, an audience in mind, since the priority it seems is keywords. What is your stand on that?
Hi Robert,
I believe that content spinning is just spamming. The whole purpose of creating content is to inform your reader or to entertain them or any thing else that makes sense. But keyword jammed content spun by software hardly make any sense. Even if they catch the attention of the search engines immediately, in the long run they might earn a penalty for spamming.
Since social media is getting stronger and stronger, only genuine content can make it to the top through public votes. Spun content can never get any audience, and if they don't, search engines would simply ignore them.
Research is extremely important. You must get your facts clear. You are into search engine marketing, and suppose you write a post about pay per click advertising. What if you don't do any research? You might end up giving wrong information which would spoil ur reputation.
A quick research will help you verify information. Morever, posts meant for information, if not researched properly, might appear very shallow. Research should be as intense as to satisfy you that you have done a great job and your article would help your audience a lot :)
Wish you all the best in your endeavours.
