SIGNS of "Christian" Cults

How do we recognize a deceived Christian?
Many today profess to be “Christians”. How can all these people be Christians when there are some very marked and serious differences in their foundational beliefs? What are the differences? In this hub we will look at the signs of TRUE Christians and DECEIVED Christians.
The Word says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world." (1 John 4:1-3). This passage is not just speaking of heavenly spirits, but the spirit influencing the false prophets out in the world.
The spirit of antichrist mimics Christ. Rev 22:16 states, "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."
Compare this truth with the counterfeit found in Isa 14:12 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn!” Is this speaking of Jesus falling from heaven? No; it's speaking of Lucifer, as he is specifically named in this passage in the King James Bible.
So what about the fallen angel? Check this out: Gal 1:8 "But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!"
Why is it so hard to discern which prophet is true and which is false? Because the Bible says that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Cor 7:14). This “light” is the very same meaning as used when Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).
Mat 24:24 states, "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect."
Revelation 13:6 states, "And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven." Do you remember that Jesus was accused of "blasphemy" because of "claiming to be God"? This is what the spirit of antichrist does!
The antichrist is prophesied to be able to deceive the whole world (except for true Christians) in Revelation 13:8 "All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain."
John 8:44 states about Satan that "He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies." I don't know if you've ever known a good liar, or even an excellent one. The best ones can deceive even the best people, especially good people who are trusting. So, how about the father of lies?!
Satan quotes the Word of God!
But how can a false prophet even speak God’s holy words, you ask? Well, let’s first look at the Devil tempting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. He used God’s very own words to tempt them. In Genesis 3:1, the “serpent” said to Eve, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from ANY TREE of the garden?” Eve, speaking back the exact word of God says, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of THE TREE which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.” The serpent then tells her, “You surely shall not die!” (LIE).
Look at Jesus’ experience with the Devil when He was tempted by the him in the desert for 40 days. In Luke 4:9-11, verse 10 quotes Satan as saying, “for it is written, ‘HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU, and ‘ON THEIR HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, LEST YOU STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’”. Indeed, Satan was quoting the prophecy written in the Old Testament in Psalm 91:11 accurately! His motive, though, was to tempt Jesus to throw himself down off the pinnacle of the temple on which he stood!
Jesus answered him in verse 12 with scripture: “It is said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST’”. We see this answer in Psalm 91:12. Did you notice that Satan only quoted verse 11 and neglected verse 12? This is common with Christian cults who also do the same!!
Here's just one actual example of a cult follower that wrote to me, and my answer to him:
"You need to start believing these verses of Scripture and not what you THINK it's suppose to mean! It says the inhabitants of the WORLD. When? When Thy judgments are in the earth. Now who does that include? The whole earth, all the inhabitants of the whole world, to me that is everybody. You say, ‘no it’s not.’ Well to me it is, I’m sorry you are going to have to show me a verse that says, when His judgments are in the earth, NOT all the inhabitants of the whole world will learn righteousness. Do you have a Scripture that says that? ‘No.’
Here is my response: You are quoting Isaiah 26:9 and you asked me to show you a verse that says, when His judgments are in the earth, NOT all the inhabitants of the whole world will learn righteousness. I do have that verse! Read the VERY NEXT VERSE, verse 10, and I quote the Word, "Though the wicked is shown favor (the Jews are God's favored), He does NOT learn righteousness; He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness, And does not perceive the majesty of the LORD."
Because of Satan, false prophets distort the Word of God. The Bible warns us of such things to come: 2 Peter 2:16-17 in regard to all the letters written by the Apostle Paul, "in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen."
SIGNS of "Christian" Cults
So what is the definition of “Cult”:
French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration, from colere to cultivate — more at wheel
Date:1617
1: formal religious veneration : worship 2: a system of religious beliefs and ritual ; also : its body of adherents 3: a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious ; also : its body of adherents 4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator <health cults> 5 a: great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book) ; especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b: the object of such devotion c: a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion.
What are the signs of a Christian cult?
Not ALL cults have ALL these signs; this is a collaboration of some of things I myself have concluded upon exposure to these false prophets:
- THIS IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH: They deny the divinity of Christ and exalt man's divinity.
- They distort the scriptures, leading to their destruction. The antichrist is said to "go to destruction" (Rev 17:11)
- They prey on innocent minds (those who are not learned in the scriptures).
- They have ONE leader that founded their doctrine; some even say an angel appeared to their leader to give him the "right interpretation" of the Bible. One I know of is re-writing the Bible into the Concordant Literal Translation (CLT)...still a work-in-progress.
- This ONE leader’s interpretation of scripture is typically published in a book, books, magazines/study guides, or even a website of their one "teacher". The less one actually picks up the Bible, the more dangerous it is.
- Their leader's prophecies do not come true; therefore, the prophecy is changed. God "changes His mind" several times.
- They are focused on works and/or rituals in order to "earn their way" into God's favor, or pay Him back for saving them.
- They consider the 144,000 elect of their particular doctrine or church.
- They don’t associate with those outside of their church’s beliefs and practices.
- Their church demands money from them.
What do TRUE Christians Believe?
What does the Bible say about each of these things? There are many scriptures addressing each one, but I will, for the sake of summary, choose but a couple each. Rather than type out every reference here, I would exhort you to grab a BIBLE and READ them first-hand!!
- The Divinity of Christ: read my hub "Who Do Say That I AM?": http://hubpages.com/hub/Who-Do-You-Say-that-I-AM / Exalt man's divinity: Genesis 3:5
- They distort the scriptures: 2 Peter 3:16-17
- They prey on innocent minds: Hosea 4:6
- They have ONE leader that founded their doctrine: Proverbs 11:14; Galatians 1:8
- One leader’s interpretation published in a book, books, magazines/study guides, or a particular website of that "teacher": 2 Peter 1:20 and Revelation 22:18-19
- Their leader's prophecies do not come true or are changed: Jeremiah 14:14-18; Ezekiel 13:1-8
- They are focused on works or rituals: Mark 7:1-30, Ephesians 2:9
- They consider the 144,000 are of their church: read my hub on "The Elect of God": http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Elect-of-God
- They don’t associate with those outside of their church: Luke 19:1-10
- Their church demands money from them: read my hub "Tithing, Giving and Alms": http://hubpages.com/hub/Tithing--Giving-and-Alms
The WAY to the TRUTH
When cults accuse true Christianity of being a "cult" or "sect", let's read what Paul has to say about that: Acts 24:13-15 "Nor can they prove to you the charges of which they now accuse me. But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers..."
Let me leave you with these scriptures in closing:
Ephesians 4:14: “…we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming, but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ.”
John 14:6 "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" Amen.

Amen, sister Sciantel. Mormonism wasn't founded until the 1800's. I don't know the founding dates of Jehovah's Witnesses or Seventh Day Adventists, let alone bibletruths.com (L. Ray Smith). These are just a few cults I am aware of. I'm sure there are many more.
Charles Manson, I can't believe convinced people he was Jesus Christ, and even got them to break the commandment of God, "Thou Shalt Not KILL". The demonic world is real, and everything the Bible states is 100% truth (when utilizing the original languages of Hebrew and Greek). It says people will be deceived by false prophets and we see it as it is stated. It's grievous to God and grievous to His children, because we desire as He does that all will come to the REAL JESUS and be saved!!
Good hub sis. Amen to it.
Satan knows the scriptures and changes one word to twist the meaning of a verse. That is what he did in the Garden of Eden with Eve. My book Spiritual Warfare: A Handbook is about the Fallen Angels and their relationship with the human race. http://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Warfare-Handbook-L
Thank you for this wonderful and enlightening hub.
Vladimir, as always, brother, thank you for your blessings. God bless you!
Smireles, that's wonderful you wrote a book. I look forward to reading it. I'm always thankful to have confirmation by the saints of what is written. Amen!!
When God created us He never intended that we as His children should conform to the ways of the world. He created us in His image to be “transformed by the renewing” of the mind . To continuously grow in grace and the knowledge of His Word. To diligently study His scriptures so we could draw closer to Him. It is so important to speak the TRUTH of God’s WORD. To know His WORD. Not in a legalistic rigid way. But in a way that helps us embrace who JESUS is.
I keep the 1st chapter of Galatians in mind. Jesus gave HIMSELF to keep us from being deceived… There is a lot of error inside and outside the walls going on today. Embraced by unknowing Christians who say they believe? I believe ALL of GOD”S WORD. We are living in some interesting times. As each day passes I am thankful to see just how gracious and patient God is. We are to point others to Jesus Christ who is the WAY. Many do not realize it but we are daily losing our rights to freely worship the Lord in Spirit and TRUTH. He does want us to be deceived. This is why He has given us all HIS COMFORTER. This is why we must ask daily for Him to fill us. It is important to keep in mind that God knows our TRUE intentions if it is not to give Him GLORY it is in vain.
Thank you for this hub. It is important to encourage others to develop a growing relationship with the Lord and not be deceived.
Great hub my sister. There is nothing false about what you teach. Keep up the good work. You are not a false prophet
God bless
How to discern the counterfeit from the authentic? It's a challenging topic that you chose to tackle Carrie. No doubt you leave yourself wide open as the cult followers post a sign on this hub and others like it, "Open Season." But that's the blessing that comes with the territory for those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake. We live in an age where we are inundated with every kind of false teaching coming down the Cultic pike. I can only pray for your protection. By the way, the Christian Cult check list and Belief list is most helpful. Keep on hubbing and God bless you.
DeBorrah, what you say is so comforting, as I shouted out to the Lord the other day in dispair for what appears to be multitudes following after the antichrist and false prophet. God's Word has always been here for this generation as well as thousands of generations.
The Word says in 2 Timothy 4:3 (ISV) "For the time will come when people will not tolerate healthy doctrine, but with itching ears will surround themselves with teachers who cater to their people's own desires."
Jesus saved a lost sheep like me in an instant, and He can do the same for anyone who will simply ask Him to come into their hearts, fill them with His Holy Spirit and guide them into all truth. Even just one-on-one with the Lord. They need to pull away from these "churches" for a time to seek the Lord and He is faithful to save them and deliver them!! Amen!!
oscarwms, I praise God for your confirmation. With everything I write I revere our God and make certain as I can possibly be that it is soundly based on His Bible alone. Each false church observes some of the truth (which is the "sheep's clothing"), but that's what "missing the mark" is all about; the worst being missing the mark of the real Jesus Christ! That's a fatal mistake!
I have noticed lately how church doctrine is preached more than the Word of God toward people. It seems many have stopped reaching out to the lost these days. They would rather gain a member of their congregation than gain a soul for the Kingdom of God.
Many say it doesn;t matter what name is over the door outside and I agree with that, what is preached inside does make a big difference. The Word of God is what it takes toi put conviction yupon those who are lost and also strengthen those who are weak or hurting.
Gicky, as I believe we are of the Lion of Judah, who is of the lineage of King David, the very boy who stood alone to face the giant for the sake of freeing his people, we have his heart! We have NO FEAR in God's perfect love. Our God is an AWESOME GOD and REIGNS over every false god out there. Imagine that just one angel of God, Michael, will bind the Devil himself (just ONE ANGEL OF GOD!) and throw him into the pit! God has myriads of angels who watch over us day and night. I am so thankful we can even walk into the fiery furnace and into the lion's den and HAVE NO FEAR. The righteous shall live by FAITH and that FAITH is in WHO HE IS. If we serve a false Christ, we will have NO POWER over evil, and men are their strength...NO MATCH for our AWESOME GOD. AMEN!!
SirDent, Amen. When we seek first His kingdom and the righteousness that comes through Christ alone, and walk by faith without wavering, it is a powerful witness. We have His heart, a heart that loves enough to speak the truth in love. While it may hurt, it heals stronger than before. To "love" someone into a cult is Satan's tactic, for the "love" of the world is hostility toward God, if we don't have their salvation at heart.
God isn't found in a church. The church is in YOU and if you don't invite Him into YOUR CHURCH, you may very well be following an alter-god. He needs to come into our hearts and then He will live through us. Amen!
LOL sorry about my typos. I should proofread better before clicking send.
SirDent, What typos? lol ~ I always see the message through His eyes...you are perfect!
You are so right on! If it were not for HIS PERFECT LOVE that casts out fear there would be reason for alarm.
You are right about the multitudes... LORD HELP US!
On the other hand it just confirms that GOD IS AWESOME and His Word is true!
That time is now. There are many itching ears...
Be encouraged in the Lord. It is important to Stand on HIS WORD. When we do this we are not alone. When we walk by FAITH our TRUST in HIM deepens immensely! "Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world" PRAISE GOD!
Blessings
And again
Thank You!
Thanks for sharing "great hub"
DeBorrahK, amen! The Word is comfort to us that love our Lord.
Cher Anne, thank you so much for your support and stopping by!
This is so true and awesome
Hijesusmyjoy :-) Thank you for becoming and fan and writing for Jesus as well! I'm glad you're also with me on my Judah's Daughter profile. God bless you so much.
I had someone tell me that in their religion only 144,000 people would make it to heaven and it was going to be them. I asked her where did she think she was going because I was sure that 144,000 have already died.
ftgfmom, Yes, this is a sad doctrine, for the Bible shows so many in heaven that they couldn't be counted. First, the 144,000 are counted, then multitudes from every nation, and all tribes, and peoples and tongues in Revelation 7:4-10. Regarding those who are sealed, it goes beyond the 144,000 when we look up "sealed" in the Bible. There are several scriptures that show anyone who is His is sealed (believers), but here's just one: Eph 4:30 "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
Very Interesting! Here, this will help: http://hubpages.com/hub/WalkwithGod
Kimberly, I read your hub ~ beautiful. Being in touch with God and walking in His Spirit (being filled with Him) will bear His fruit, which is the essence of salvation in Him, because of the holy blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. Amen!
You said:
"God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.” The serpent then tells her, “You surely shall not die!” (LIE)."
To which I reply:
(Ignoring all the symbolism and instead interpreting this literally) Adam and Eve both ate the fruit... and did not die. So it appears God was lying and Satan wasn't.
I never quite got this...even when you interpret the scripture symbolically. Why did God originally try to shield his creations from the knowledge of good and evil...to the point of telling them they'd die.
pjk_artist, you are assuming they would die instantly, as with the case of Ananias & Sapphira in Acts 5. We know 1 Cor 20:22 states, "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." We don't know if Adam and Eve were supposed to live forever on earth, or whether God was speaking of spiritual death for all eternity. It is a mystery. Satan is not telling the truth, for the Bible also states that he is the "father of lies". He can indeed quote scripture, but will twist its interpretation, as he did with Jesus in the desert. I hope that helps.
This is a really thorough hub. We have a home assembly and some have tried to label us a cult. It is not. There is no organization, no special buidling, no money, and no books (other than the Bible). It is spirit led which means it convenes when anyone has a need to have it and it ends whenever it is done. There is no schedule of worship. It's just a matter of coming together, assembling, when someone, anyone, expresses a need for it. All present have a voice. There is no doctrine deemed right and wrong in order to assemble. Anyone from any faith can praise the Lord and study the Bible. When people feel uncomfortable with the format, the openness, they usually just don't ask again. Many however, especially when they are going through things, come and request. Whoever is present is expected to stop what they are doing to aid that person's search for help. Nothing in our lives should be so busy that we cannot stop and assist a person in spiritual distress, or just needing the joy of assembling.
A M Werner, it certainly sounds like a fellowship of the Lord! People are welcome to come or not to, but your doors are open and the willingness is there to minister to all who have needs. I have a hub on my other profile here on HubPages (Judah's Daughter) called "Sword of the Spirit" that outlines true and false biblical doctrines (based on thorough study thus far) ~ doctines of hell and doctrines that simply "miss the mark". If you get a chance to read it, I would love your feedback! God bless you so much!

What is so scary about this is that Satan knows the scriptures better than the best church ministers. We all need to stay to the true doctrine and to do that is to keep to the true Bible principles plain and simple. Steer away from cults who claim that theirs is the Bible. Make sure their Bible, if a person suspects it not the truth, that it predates to the time at least of when first printed when the true churches were formed. Because other churches that did not preach His gospel according to His apostles branched off and formed their churches and bibles based on their humanism, not the divine teachings of Christ.
