ST Valentines Day 1929 Chicago
79With my slight obsession of all things Mafia and or Gang related i thought this would be a good choice for my first HUB page :D .
The St. Valentines Day Massacre is thus n fame after the shooting death of 6 Irish gang members and 1 associate of the gang from the North Side of Chicago by Italian gang members of the South side
The leaders of the two rival factions were George Clarence Bugs Moran born Adelard Cunin leader of the Irish Gang and Alphonse Gabriel Al Capone leader of the Italian gang.
The seven victims were lined up on the inside back wall of a garage on Chicagos North Side. They were then shot and killed by either outside talent brought into keep any would be surviors from knowing their killers or members of Al Capones gang more likley though it was a combination of both.
The Seven men were Peter Gusenberg, a top enforcer in the Moran organization. Frank Tight Lips Gusenberg, Peter’s younger brother and another enforcer. Frank was still alive when police first arrived on the scene. He died three hours later, saying only, "Nobody shot me." Keeping true to his nickname. Albert Kachellek, aka "James Clark", was Moran's second-in-command. Adam Heyer, the bookkeeper and business manager of the Moran gang. Reinhart Schwimmer, an optician who had abandoned his practice to gamble on horse racing (unsuccessfully) and associate with the Moran gang. He was called a "gang groupie". Though Schwimmer called himself an "optometrist" he was actually an optician (an eyeglass fitter) and he had no medical training. Albert Weinshank, who managed several cleaning and dyeing operations for Moran. His physical and even clothing resemblance to Moran is what may haveset the massacre in motion before Moran actually arrived. John May, an occasional and the most preferable car mechanic for the Moran gang, but not a gang member.
the massacre was originally planed as a way to get rid of Maron but because of a mistake byt the look out the hit started to early saving marons life but taking out some of his top men and associates.
there were 4 men two dressed as officers and two in street clothing rolled up in a sedan and a peerless made to look like detective vehicles. they then ordered the seven men inside the garage to line up along the walls. aperently there was no resistance from the men because they thought this was a bust to make the police department look good and gain public favor and suspected nothing . they were then killed by to thompsan sub machin guns (TOMMY GUNS) a 20 round drum and a fifty round drum used.
the aftermath was not so bloody and climate changing at all allthough public outrage saw that the Massacre marked the beginning of the end to Moran's power. Despite the fact that Moran suffered a heavy blow, he managed to keep control of his territory until the 1930s, when control moved to the Chicago Outfit under Frank Nitti. The massacre also brought the attention of the federal government to Capone and his criminal activities.
In 1931, Capone was convicted of income tax evasion and was imprisoned for 11 years. The massacre ultimately affected both Moran and Capone and left the war they had with each other a stalemate. Although massacre did severely cripple the North Side gang, a blow from which they never fully recovered , the primary target of the massacre, Moran, escaped, and the public and police pressure brought on the Capone organization hampered the capone operation almost as badly.
