BEGUM HAZRAT MAHAL
Stamp Issue Date : 10/05/1984Postage Stamp Dinomination : 0.50Postal Stamp Serial Number : 1123Postal Stamp Name : BEGUM HAZRAT MAHALStamp Information : INDIA'S STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM The first war of freedom (1857-58) was the first funeral widespread uprising against the rule of the British East India Company. The doctrine of Lapse, issue of cartridges with animal fat to India soldiers, introduction of British system of education and a number of social reforms had infuriated a very wide section of Indian people, who rose in revolt at a number of places all over India. The East India Company was brought under the direct rule of the British crown as a result of this uprising. Of the very large number of freedom fighters, who led the struggle, four are being commemorated through the present series, which is a part of the larger series on India's Struggle for Freedom. BEGUM HAZRAT MAHAL Wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Hazrat Mahal was known as the Begum of Avadh. In addition to being gifted with irrestible physical charm, she had an inborn genius for organisation and command. After her husband had been sent away in exile to Calcutta, she with the cooperation of a zealous hand of supporters like Sarafaddaulah, Maharaj Bal Krishna, Raja Jai Lal and above all Mammon Khan worked incessantly to revive the fortunes of Avadh. She seized control of Lucknow in association with the revolutionary forces and set up her son, Prince Birjis Qadr, as the King of Avadh, Hazrat Mahal worked in association with Nana Saheb but later escaped from Lucknow and joined the Maulavi of Faizabad in the attack on Sahajahanpur. She was driven from pillar to post, but she made her retreat with fortitude. She rejected with the contempt the promises of allowance and status held out to her by the British against whom her hatred was unrelenting. In the end after bearing misfortunate and misery throughout the period of resistance, she found asylum in Nepal where she died in 1879. MANGAL PANDEY Mangal Pandey, a resident of Ballia, in Uttar Pradesh, was a soldier in the army of the British East India Company. At the time of the First War of Independence, the Company introduced new rifles, which used animal fat for greasing the cartridges. Influenced by the example of his compatriots in Behrampur, Mangal Pandey refused to use the greased cartridges and broke into open mutiny on March 29, 1857, at Barrackpore near Calcutta and used his comrades to join him. Surrounding by guards and European Officers, he tried to commit suicide by shooting himself and was seriously wounded. He was court-martialled on April 6 and hanged at Barrackpore on April 8, 1857. NANA SAHEB A Maratha, one of the leaders of the First War of Independence, Nana Saheb was born in 1824 to Narayan Bhatt and Ganga Bai. In 1827 his parents went to the court of the last Peshwa Baji Rao, who adopted Nana Saheb, thus making him her-presumptive to the throne. Nana Saheb was well educated. He studied Sanskrit and was known for his deep religious nature. On the death of the last Peshwa, Baji Rao-II, in 1851 the Company's Government stopped the annual pension and the title. Nana Saheb's appeal to the Court of Directors was not accepted. This made him hostile towards the British rulers. When the First War of Independence broke out, he assumed leadership of the mutineers in Kanpur. After seizing Kanpur, which had a small British garrison, Nana Saheb proclaimed himself as Peshwa and called for the total extermination of the British power in India. Kanpur was recaptured by the British General Havelock and the last serious engagement (16 July, 1857) resulted in total route of Nana's forces. Nana rode away to an unknown destination in Nepal in 1859 and probably perished in the jungle. TATYA TOPE Tatya Tope also known as Ram Chandra Pandurang was born in 1814 at village Gola in Maharashtra. His father, Pandurang Rao Tope was an important noble at the court of the Peshwa Baji Rao-II. He shifted his family with the ill-fated Peshwa to Bithur where his son became the most intimate friend of the Peshwa's adopted son, Nana Dhundu Pant, known as Nana Saheb. In 1851, when Lord Dalhousie deprived Nana Saheb of his father's pension, Tatya Tope also became a sworn enemy of the British. In May 1857, when the political storm was gaining momentum, he won over the Indian troops of the East India Company, stationed at Kanpur, established Nana Saheb's authority and became the Commander-in-Chief of his revolutionary force. After the reoccupation of Kanpur and separation from Nana Saheb, Tatya Tope shifted his headquarters to Kalpi to join hands with Rani Lakshmi Bai and led a revolt in Bundelkhand. He was routed at Betwa, Koonch, and Kalpi, but reached Gwalior and declared Nana Saheb as Peshwa with the support of the Gwalior contingent. Before he could consolidate his position he was defeated by General Rose in a memorable battle in which Rani Lakshmi Bai suffered martyrdom. After losing Gwalior to the British, he launched a successful guerilla campaign in the Sagar and Narmada regions and in Khandesh and Rajasthan. The British forces failed to subdue him for over a year. He was, however, betrayed into the hands of the British by his trusted friend Man Singh, Chief of Marwar, while asleep in his camp in the Paron forest. He was captured and taken to Sipri where he was tried by a military court and executed at the gallows on April 18, 1859. XXIII OLYMPIC-BASKET BALL
Stamp Issue Date : 28/07/1984Postage Stamp Dinomination : 0.50Postal Stamp Serial Number : 1127Postal Stamp Name : BASKET BALLStamp Information : XXIII OLYMPIC GAMES The origin of Olympic Games goes back to the end of fourteenth century B.C. The original games were purely Greek in culture, which led to their being banned by the Emperor Theodosius in A.D. 393. The Games as we know them today, were revived in 1896. In June 1894, the International Congress of Paris for the re-establishment of the Olympic Games was convened in the amphitheatre of the Sorbonne of Paris. Its success surpassed the hopes of Baron de Coubertin, inspirer of the revived Olympic Movement and rightly called the father of the modern Olympics. On 23rd June, the Congress, with the unanimous support of the seventy-nine delegates and forty-nine sports associations from twelve countries present, agreed to re-establish the Games, choosing to hold them in the true Hellenic tradition in Athens in 1896. The 1896 Olympic Games were thus held in Athens in the Pan Athenic stadium of Harodas, which was amalgamated so that there was 400 meters circuit, with sharp turns. There were ten sports included in the first programme: Cycling, Gymnastics, Tennis, Swimming, Lifting, Rowing, Wrestling and shooting. The games have been held regularly every 4 years thereafter, except for the two World Wars; and have grown with the passage of time. Today there are twenty-one sports, besides a number of disciplines within each sport. The Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Fortius"-Swifter, Higher, Stronger made its appearance at the Antwerp Games in 1922. Its inventor, was at Dominican, Father Henry Didon, who had a great influence on Coubertin. The Twenty Third Summer Olympics are being held in Los Angeles, California, Sam, the eagle, as designed by Walt Disney Productions is the official mascot, while the star Emblem symbolizes the speed and competition spirit of the contestant. The Los Angeles Games are planned to be the first Olympic financed by private industry sponsors. A non-private organisation, incorporated under the laws of the State of California will manage the event. Though it joined the International Olympic Committee only in 1927, India has been taking part in the Games since 1920. Besides Hockey, which had been our forte for a record spell, India shall this time be sending a seventy strong contingent who shall participate in Athletics, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Shooting, Boxing and Tennis (demonstration). Whatever laurels and awards, our sportsmen win, India shall certainly live up to the Olympic ideal that taking part is more important than winning. GWALIOR The Gwalior Fort was built by a Rajput chieftain named Suraj Sen in gratitude to Gwalipa, an ascetic who cured him of Leprosy. Between 6th and 12th century AD the Fort changed hands from one dynasty to another, from Gurjar Pratihars to Kannod of Kuttbuddin. The Fort remained in the hands of Muslim Kings of Delhi until 1438, when during the invasion of India by Timur, Beersingh Deo, a Tomar Rajput made himself master of Gwalior. Raja Mansingh, the greatest of the Tomars was a man of culture and refinement. He built the Mansingh Palace and the Gujri Mahal and a school of Music, where India's greatest musicians- Tansen, was a student. After the death of Mansingh in 1517 AD the Fort passed into the hands of Ibrahim Lodhi and subsequently to Babar. With the decline of the Mughal Empire, Gwalior passed into the hands of Maratha powers, represented by the Scindias. Like more other Forts, the Gwalior Fort is situated atop a hill, some 300 feet above the plains. The hill is 1,3/4 mile long and the breadth varies from 600 to 2200 feet. The enclosing wall is 30 feet high. VELLORE The Fortress of Vellore is situated about 125 kms. west of Madras. Built in this historical town, the Fort is one of the most perfect specimen of military architecture in the South. The 'Ethaladurg' or Land Fort was built by Chinna .... Nayak a subordinate Chief under Sada Sivaraya and Sri Ranga Maharaj, the Vijaynagar Kings in the third quarter of the 16th century AD. The Sultan of Bijapur seized Vellore by about the middle of the 17th century. In 1676 AD the Fort was captured by the Marathas who were in turn ousted by Daud Khan of Delhi in 1708 AD. The Fort was under the charge of Dost Ali, Nawab of Carnatic who gifted it in 1710 AD to his son-in-law, whose son Mohammed Ali kept the Fort as a stronghold for nearly 20 years. In 1760 AD the Fort was occupied by an English garrison, and finally after the fall of Srirangapatnam and the death of Tipu Sultan, the English kept Tipu's sons and daughters in captivity in Vellore Fort. The fortification consists of a main rampart broken at irregular intervals by round towers and rectangular projections. The main walls are built of massive granite stones surrounded by a broad moat fed with water by sub-terranian drains from the Suryagunta tank. The Forts of India, stand as befitting 'monuments' to the pride, courage and chivalry of the rulers and people of India who relentlessly strove against invading armies to preserve their freedom and to keep alive their fait and their culture. SIMHAGAD Formerly known as Kondhana, the earliest mention of this Fort is to be found in Isamis Futuh-us-Salatin, when the Fort was taken over by Mohammad-bin-Tughluq from the Kolis. The Fort was again captured by Malik Ahmed Nizam, the founder of Nizamshahi dynasty of Ahmadnagar in 1483 AD. The Fort was given in Jagir to Shivaji's father Sahaji Bhosle by the Nizamshah of Ahmadnagar. The Fort had to be handed over to the Bijapur Sultan, from whom Shivaji captured the Fort by force, and it remained in his possession for a long time with the exception of a short period. In the beginning of 1670 AD Shivaji's Infantry General Tanaji Malusare captured the Fort from the Mughals, but lost his life in the action. From this incident springs the story that Shivaji renamed the Fort as Simhagad after Tanaji. From Shivaji the Fort further changed hands, to Aurangzeb, to Marathas, to Mughals, to the Peshwas and finally to the British. Shaped like an axe with a short handle, the Fort occupies on area of about two-square miles. The top is very rugged and surrounded by strong fortification on all sides, and is flanked by 33 towers or bastions. Only those parts of the hill which are naturally protected by steep precipices are left without walls and it is the western part of these natural fortifications that Tanaji Malusare is said to have scaled in his invasion of the Fort, The Fort is situated about 15 miles to the south west of Pune, 4322 feet above the sea level and 2300 feet about Pune plains. FORTS OF INDIA-JODHPUR
Stamp Issue Date : 03/08/1984Postage Stamp Dinomination : 2.00Postal Stamp Serial Number : 1134Postal Stamp Name : JODHPURStamp Information : THE FORTS OF INDIA Built by titans and lit by the glory of fire, blood and love- the grandest sights in India. The Forts of India, stand as befitting 'monuments' to the pride, courage and chivalry of the rulers and people of India who relentlessly strove against invading armies to preserve their freedom and to keep alive their fait and their culture. JODHPUR The historic fort of Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha in the year 1459 AD: who shifted his capitol from Mandore to present day Jaodhpur. Its original names were 'Chintamani' and 'Mordhaj' but later on it came to be called as Meherangarh- The Majestic Fort. The Fort stands out magnificently on an isolated rock about 400 feet above the city. It is the finest example of beautiful architecture, which can rightly be described as 'Poetry in Stone'. Long, slim minarets touching the sky and countless fine-latticed screens stand out against the huge walls, varying in height from 20 to 120 feet. The Fort has two principal entrances namely FATEH POL (Victory Gate) and JAI POL (Glory Gate) besides five other subsidiary entrances. Inside the Fort, there are magnificent Royal Palaces, built by various Rathore rulers of Marwar from time to time. An attempt has been made to recreate the traditional atmosphere in this historic monument by housing various items all over the Fort as part of Museum. Besides the Royal palaces, the temple of 'NAGNECHALJI', the family deity of the Rathores of Kannauj, and the 'Chamunda Devi Temple' draw regular devotees and visitors. One of best tribute to our real heros and leaders. At least they did not exploit the poor and honest.
