SUZE ORMAN ON OPRAH: RECESSION RESCUE ADVICE

Recession Effects Being Felt

Did you see financial expert, Suze Orman on Oprah today, April 2nd/09? Pretty sobering. The recession is affecting more and more people all the time. Due to this financial crisis 4.4 million jobs have been lost or in numbers we can get our head around; 15 jobs a minute. People declaring personal bankruptcy rose 31% in 2007-08. Bankruptcy filings are expected to rise another 35% in 2009.

Do you know what your family would do if you lost your job—or worse, your home? This is a tough question but it needs to be addressed.

Jobs are being lost at a staggering rate. 10,000 homes daily are being foreclosed on. With no where to go families turn to shelters and tent cities are springing up all over.

Suze Orman has a 5 step plan to help people take control of their financial futures. She calls it “your own personal financial stimulus plan” Reminds me of the quote: “It it’s going to be; it’s up to me”

It's time to take this recession seriously and be as fiscally responsible as possible.

Step 1: Live On Half

Suzie Orman divided the audience in 1/2; on one side were the 2 income families and on the other side single income earners.

Her advice to these two groups?

Live on half of their income.

Practice living on what you would have to live on if you or your spouse lost their job. Unemployment will only pay half of your salary.

This was not new advice to me. Back in the 70s I worked with a man who's wife stayed home with the kids and he banked every other pay check! I remember the gal that I worked with at the time and I were both shocked that anyone could do that. Looking back now, if I had taken that advice my life would look very different now.

Suzie Orman recommended that the audience do this for 6 months. Most of the audience looked like they might be willing to try it for a month but were shocked at the idea of 6 months.

Recession reality is that if you do lose your job you will be out of work for 8 to 12 months. Best to prepare in advance and build up an emergency fund.

I lost my job in 1999 and I can tell you it is a major shock not only to your finances but to your psyche. The tendency is to keep living the same lifestyle because you truly don't believe you will be out of work for long. The reality today is that you will be out of work for several months. I never did get another j.o.b. I became self-employed which was only a partial solution. Learning to have an online business was a much better choice.

Step 2: Stash Your Cash

The get out of debt queen is changing her advice. Suzie Orman has always advised people to pay off their debt first.

Now she says that when the economy changes good financial advice must change with the economy.

So Suzie Ormans new recession advice is advice that we never thought we would hear:

Pay the minimum on your credit card and stash your cash.

Orman informs us that in times of recession credit card companies are afraid people aren't going to pay their bills. Credit card debit is unsecured debt which means they can't take your car or your house. Companies close accounts with zero balances. They reduce credit limits on those paying only small amounts and increase interest rates.

So if you don't have credit cards and you lose your job; what can you do?

Suze also cautions that you don't rack up any more credit card debt! The ideas is to pay the minimum and stash the cash until you have at least an 8 month cushion in your emergency fund.

Step 3: Make the Stimulus Package Work for You

The economic stimulus package was not only designed to create jobs. It was also designed to help those out of work.

Many laid off employees qualify for COBRA health coverage. Your company has to cover you for 18 months with health insurance. This coverage is available to anyone laid off between Sept 1st 2008 until the end of 2009. Even if you said no to your employers offer previously you now have 60 days to enroll. Instead of paying 100% of your benefits you need only pay 35%. So if you are currently paying $470/mo your new amount is $164.50 which is a savings of almost $3000 per year. Learn more at the Department of Labor's website.

Helping the housing market is another aim of the economic stimulus package. For homes purchased in 2009 you can qualify for an $8000 tax credit which means if you owe $10,000 in taxes you would only pay $2000. Another qualifier is that your income must be $75,000 or less per year.

Step 4: Make Your Home Affordable

The Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan is designed to help almost 9 million families stay in their home. There is a Home Affordable Modification program for those close to foreclosure. The government estimates that 3-4 million could keep their homes by reducing their monthly mortgage payments.

According to Suze there are two qualifiers:

Go to MakingHomeAffordable.gov to answer a series of questions to assess eligiblity and then go to your bank to see if they will give you a modification.

This for those who aren't in danger of losing their homes but want to lower their mortgage payments. This is only for those who's mortgage is backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.

Step 5: Look at What You Have, Not What You Had

If we're honest with ourselves I don't think we need Suzie Orman to tell us that it is going to get worse before it gets better. Suzie predicts that it could be 2015 before this recession really turns around.

Her advice is to be grateful for what you do have whether its a savings account or helpful family members. "If you continuously look in the rearview mirror while you're going forward, you're going to get in an accident. And the victim of that accident is going to be you," she says.

Suze says, "When you are grateful--when you can see what you have--you unlock blessings to flow in your life." This is the law of attraction at work here.

Recessions Come & Recessions Go

To put this recession in perspective I have posted an article on my blog: Recession Fear Fueled by Suze Orman? The Bull (& The Bear) Of It All Check out a diagram which shows the bull and bear markets over the past 60 years. Note how often they occur and how long they each last!

Recession Marching Orders

In conclusion, Suzie Orman offers 5 tips to plan your own personal stimulus package for this recession. Learn to live on half your income whether single or married.Instead of paying off your credit cared debt; stash your cash. COBRA health insurance has to cover you for 18 months.Take steps to lower your mortgage payments. First time home purchasers can reduce their taxes substantially. Finally have a grateful heart and move forward with courage.

Hi Irene, yes, the economic situation sure is scary - good to know there are people like you and Suze out there to offer advice. It takes some of the fear out of it when you know you're not alone and someone is there to give you some guidance.

It's surprising to see that Suze is saying to just pay the minimum on credit card balances - I've been paying the balance to avoid the finance charge but will now reconsider.

I really agree with the part about looking at what you have and not what you had - it's hard to do if you've lost a lot but anguishing over it only makes matters worse. Gotta move on. . .

Thanks for the great hub!

Thanks Daniel and Laura. My advice to people is to expand their income circle once they have done the basics as Suze recommends.

As I say in my other hub: Suze Orman's 5 Tip Action Plan for Economic Downturn

Suze Orman is a great place to start but you really need to diversifying; diversifying using the internet. The internet is a phenomenal tool for leverage which is the secret of the rich. Ann Sieg recently launched a free report called The Attraction Marketers Manifesto. This report is packed with useful marketing information and will be worth the read for any marketer. Download your copy now: http://attractionmarketingsuccess.com

In this report Ann Sieg announces that she is joining forces with Mike Klingler of Renegade Professional. This is big news for you and me. The playing field has been leveled. We can now market online with low-cost, no cost methods. To see interview: http://RenegadePro101.com

To summarize, Suze Orman is your step one. Apply her tips.Get your house in order. Step two is to allow the Law of Attraction to work for you instead of against you. Third diversify, preferably online and learn how to have your own work from home online business. The free report, The Attraction Marketer's Manifesto has many nuggets that will get your creative juices flowing!

Suze is definitely a guru when it comes to financial advice, although I have to agree with MarketingRight that I find the suggestion to only pay the minimum balance on your credit card a strange one. I'm not a financial expert but here is my approach: live within your means, create multiple streams of income and recognize that happiness isn't based upon material possessions. Thanks for sharing some valuable information Irene.

Thanks for your valuable comments Angela, Shelly, & Cindy. I probably should have explained more about why Suze was changing her advice for these hard economic times. If people pay off their credit card debt and don't have at least an 8 month emergency fund they will be in serious trouble if and when the credit card companies cancel their credit cards. They won't have a credit card and they won't have a cushion of funds.

I just watched this today on my DVR - very powerful and scary all in the same. About living on 1/2 though - not sure about that one. I think it is easy for her and Oprah to say - I think I could live on 1/2 of millions. How can one live on 1/2 when they cannot live on a whole?

It's easy for Suze Orman let us know what five steps should save the whole earth. These five steps are not helping those who are in financial trouble already. Even the government didn't care about New Orleans other than to make an appearance and say yes it is a disaster, let's hurry up back to the White House and play some Socom. Suze makes big money everytime she makes an appearance on TV. That way she can sell her books and products to the general public. America worships the rich and the rich have most people wrapped around their little finger. It's all in the book of Revelations. These rich are not hurt of the second death like with credit cards and forclosures. Stop buying their goodies.

Irene - living on half your income is a great idea if it can be done, not everyone in Americ is living high off the hog, I know plenty of people who just can't cut down anymore what with the high cost of housing, medical insurance and home fuel costs. The bit about paying only the minimum on your credit card seems crazy because you'll rack up interest. I've seen this advise before...maybe it is something to consider....

Hi Irene,

Thanks so much for sharing Suze's advice in such a clear and concise manner. I saw her on Larry King just after the first of the year and her advice then was "Prepare to lose your job!" I like it that she's now helping people see what to do when and if that happens.

Hi Irene, this is the first time that I have visited you , and I must say your advice gives plenty to think about. My husband and I both work and if one of us were made redundant , the other would have to give up theirs as we would be above the threshhold for help and below the threshold for living. Seems that we are in a Catch 22 situation.

Thanks for all your great input!

@PartyAnimal I'm glad you saw the program; it's hard to condense an hour into a few lines. Yes the thought of living on 1/2 was shocking to me when I heard it proposed 30 years ago but its amazing what people can do when they set their minds to it.

@WhiteHorse I'm pretty sure Suze Orman wasn't always rich. Robert Kiyosaki who lived in his car at one point said when he looked at an apartment building to buy each apartment had a big screen TV. He said he couldn't afford a big screen TV himself but he could afford the apartment building. They have a different mindset. What happened in New Orleans was disgraceful. Many rich; like Brad Pitt as one example are doing what they can as individuals to help.

@Dolores Monet No not everyone is living high off the hog which is why my advice was to start with Suze but to also expand your income circle. The credit card advice was short term advice until you had an 8 month emergency fund. You would be in real trouble if they cancelled your credit card and had no savings

@Hawkesdream It isn't an easy solution. Having lost my job and 1/2 our income I can tell you I wish we had taken steps before it happened! Dig the well before you need it; see my advice above. When you have had 2 incomes it is very difficult to change you lifestyle overnight and you continue living it not believing that you will be out of work for months. It's a dreadful feeling having your debit card declined at the grocery store.

SUZE ORMAN ON OPRAH RECESSION RESCUE ADVICE

Thanks for the reminders. I knew most of that but it is so easy to forget.

I think for the most part she definitely has very good advice. I have been able to take away very good tips that have helped many times when I have read or listen to what she said. The few times I have seen her on Oprah, however, it seems that she usually talks down to those in the audience. It almost seems like she's teaching kindergartners. Anyway, I guess it's possible that this way of teaching is necessary.

Renegade Coach profile image

Renegade Coach  says:

I appreciate your comments Sophieqd & Ashxyz.

I think many of us are guilty of knowing something but forgetting so it is nice to get the reminders.

As far as Suze talking down to her audience I just take what I like and leave the rest. We're in such a mess as a whole perhaps we need to be treated like we're in kindergarten.

Financial literary is not taught in school and it is every bit as important as reading literacy in my book.

Nickij  says:

I agree with a previous comment that Suze and others like her are getting paid big time for their advice.  Nothing against them and we all have to make a living, but most of these things are common sense.   Do not live above your means, stay away from credit cards and save your money.  It's that simple.  They get BIG BUCKS because people are so hungry for something.  We have to learn to take control of our own lives and not depend on so many people to guide us.

Great Hub! I agree with most of what Suze Orman has to say. I am happy she is recommending that people stash cash before they pay off their credit cards.

My family has been living on less than half of our income for a number of years now. (It is easier when you don't have debt.) It is hard at first but then you adapt. And in times like these my savings give me peace of mind.

Hi Irene,

I too find Suze's style irritating... but as you said, don't shoot the messenger. And I'm glad to hear she's changing her advice to match the times. Another guru I like is Loral Langemeier who wrote The Millionaire Maker. Her advice has always been to generate more income first rather than paying off debt first. You have more options when you have more income.

Thanks for sharing this advice.

I found Suze Ormans advice to be a half way solution. She says in one breath that the $5.00 for a cup of coffee will be something that you really want later, (that's a meal when you are living in a tent). Is she truly trying to help peolpe or pandering to the credit institutions, why would you be hanging on what your credit account or credit score is if you are living in a tent... If you were truly planning for your income to be cut, the unsecured credit card loans should be ingnored, ( you'll want that $150.00 payment when you are in a tent struggling to feed your family) and put that cash in a coffee can, like they should be the moment that you have your income cut. While her suggestions in essence are a good ideas on an individual scale, will they cause further tightening of the economy?

This is so well-written, I don't want to be negative. I think Orman knows that bread and butter are good together, and her readers are her bread and the financial industry is her butter. But much of what she says is very sensible. I lost my job in October of 2008 in the financial sector after a singel trip to the hospital (WITH insurance) left me with thousands in debt. I had to take a hard look at my life and I made some hard choices. I work for myself now and I do like it. I work much harder for the same pay but it's more satisfying and I can sleep at night. Thanks for a great read. :)
