Here are some tips.

- Grab bars should be installed near the tub or shower and next to the toilet for a safe bath. Grab bars are items that are easy to install and it will help a lot.

- Using non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors. Having a handicap accessible bathroom is an important element of home safety as many falls occur in the bathroom .

- A special toilet seat is available in stores for handicapped. This seat is much thicker and raises the seat up several inches. Maintaining their balance is much easier when they do not have to sit and rise from a low place.

- Any rug without a rubber back should be removed and replaced with skid-proof rubber backed rugs to ensure footing. This is especially important in the bathtub and sink areas

- Try to Install soap and shampoo holders at a comfortable height. Bending or reaching for bathing necessities can be dangerous when contending with slippery wet conditions.

- A heat lamp  installed in the ceiling is an inexpensive way to increase the room temperature while bathing.You can increase the amount of light in the bathroom.

- You can conside installing a telephone inside of the bathroom for an emergency situation that may arise.The senior person can reach the phone and dial a family member for help.

- Make your bathroom clutter free. Clothing and towels on the floor are invitations to a trip and fall. Cluttered shelves lead to things falling onto the floor. When older people have to bend down to pick items up they are at a high risk for a tumble.
