When a student head off to college they must be aware about the safety measures they are required to take. A college is a place where a student gets introduced with many students, adults and strangers. They may have to walk alone at night along dimly lit campus path, which may not always be safe. Safety of a student in college should be top priority of parents and they must also make their children aware about it. Some useful safety tips for college students are:

  • Avoid vulnerable situation: It is better to keep off the potentially dangerous situations. Try to travel and stay in group and take route to classes through well-lit and common passage. If you need to use public transport at night, stay off from strangers. Restrain from using drugs or alcohol in college parties. It is better if you can pair up with a trusted friend to stay away from intoxicants. If it is not possible, better leave the party. Carry any self defense products such as pepper sprays that would deter attackers. If possible, try to have a cell phone to stay in touch with your friends.
  • Stay alert: It is important to stay alert and keep a close eye on surroundings. If you are in a situation that is potentially dangerous or a tension is building up, look out for the possible exit route. Look around when walking or sitting alone. A stranger who is loitering around you, a car speeding up suspiciously warrants attention. If you are alert you can keep off many unsafe incidences.
  • Prevention: Do not wear expensive jewelry, watch and carry too much cash. Wear comfortable clothes and running shoes and keep important phone numbers on cell phone. If you are faced with confrontation or attack face it confidently to discourage assailant. If possible try to attend self defense class. If you are living in a dorm or apartment then make sure to close all the doors and windows and lock it before leaving. When you return your home to find something out of place inform police immediately.
