Every person working in sales has the same goal: to be the most well-know expert in their field of business. When people think of your business, you want them to think of you as the front-runner, with more know-how than the competition. This is often easier said than done.
The following anecdote illustrates an important point: A customer comes in for an appointment with the head of a very well-known marketing agency. His first question is: "Show me some results. I hear you are the best, but I haven't seen proof."
The head of the marketing department, the guru of word-of-mouth advertising that heads up the company, answers, "Easy, how did you hear about our business?" Of course, the customer immediately realizes that word-of-mouth marketing is the company's most successful strategy.
The point being made here is that a huge part of selling yourself as an expert is making people believe that you are one. If your goal is to make people think of you as the foremost expert in your field, selling yourself as such is one way to reach that goal.
Now, how do you achieve this goal? It may not be the easiest thing to do, but you can learn how to develop the kind of reputation that will bring customers calling. What all the best-known experts in any given field have in common is that they have learned this trick.
These "experts" aren't necessarily the best in their fields, but they are the best at one thing: getting customers thinking that they are the best and therefore, getting the calls. Whether they picked this trick up from mentors or from training seminars, they know how to apply themselves when it comes to self-branding.
The first rule of branding yourself an expert is to act like one. In marketing, it's important to act like you have something to sell. If you are able to get your advice to people on the internet or through e-mail, they may find that they like what you have to offer and will turn into loyal customers.
This lesson can be applied outside of the field of marketing as well. No matter what your field, if customers think of you as an expert, they will seek you out.
