Some basic facts on selling...
Did you know that most sales training taught in this country does not teach the sales staff to give the client a good deal? Instead they teach them to "PROTECT THE PROFIT" of the company. They are trained to mearly make you "feel" like you got a good deal but in reality you are getting ripped off!!
"The average profit margin on a pop up camper = 28% net profit, Travel Trailer = 18% net profit, Fifth Wheels = 16-18% Net profit, Motorhomes 7-9% Net profit."
Net profit is the profit the company makes after paying all expenses on the sale. As you can see dollar for dollar the company makes a better return on their investment selling entry level rv's.
Let me explain.
Lets pretend for a minute. Say I hired you to come and sell for me. I am going to give you 20 percent of the profit that you make on sales. I give you a product to sell that lists for $20,000.00. Since most people do not like to pay "list" (or Full Price) for anything I instruct you that you can sell it for as low as $16,000.00 if you want.
Keep in mind, the more you sell it for the more you make.
So your pay is set up so you get 20% of whatever is left over AFTER you subtract all the costs. If you sell the product for $20,0000.00 and all the costs came to $15,000.00 then you would get 20% of $5,000.00 or $1,000.00. Not bad money hugh.
But if you sold that same product for $16,000.00 minus the cost of $15,000.00 you would only make $200.00. Not as good as $1,000 is it? No.
What would ever make you want to sell that product for anything less than list? Maybe if your client was a close family member you would lower the price, but a stranger off the street? No way.
Now like I said, I have giving you the power to lower the price. The reason I did that was to allow you to lower the price so a client wouldn't "walk". (Sales term meaning a client left the store with out making a deal). I have giving you the ability to lower the price until the customer says YES. You want to keep the price as high as you can so you can make more money, I want you charge as much as you can so I make more money.
Where's your loyalty? Who you looking out for? To a client you don't even know or to me, your boss, or to your family, depending on you to put food on the table and pay the bills?
It definitly isn't the client.
Most people don't realize that the first thing that they teach you in sales is to sell yourself. Here's the order of sales:
1) Sell yourself - If you don't sell yourself first and get a client to like you, they won't buy from you.
2) Sell your company - Now you have to sell the company. You make people feel warm and fuzzy buying from your store. Show them that your store will be around after the sale.
3) Sell the product - After you sell yourself, then sell the company, sell the product.
A good rule of thumb is if the sales person is overly nice and helpful, insist's you only deal with them and they take your name and number to "keep in touch" they make their money by selling you products at the highest price they can.
What I have been trying to show you is you can't trust any sales people. I am sure there are exceptions but you have to know this going into the game. Here are some examples of people who are very good at what they do, Get as much money out of you as possible.
Sales people paid on commision:
- Car Dealers
- Recreational Vehicle Dealers (Boats, Campers, Motorcycles etc)
- Hot Tub, Pool Dealers
- Time Share
- Camping memberships
- Resort memberships
- Fitness Gyms
- Weight Loss clinics
- Appliance Stores
- Furnitiure Stores
- Bose Stores
- Building Contractors
- Door to Door Sales (Schwan's, Green Thumb, Tru-Green, Kirby, The guy with the old pick up truck filled with seafood and steaks)
- Waiters (They might not get paid actual commision but they usually have a contest or the ability to earn a few extra dollars by talking you into the "New Dessert" they just came out with.
There are numerous others but this gives you a pretty good idea.
All these professions have one thing in common, their job is to talk you into buying their product. They might not all get paid the same. Such as some may make a flat fee for a sale while others make a commision on the profit. But they all are trained to talk you into something, help you get over that buying hump. They have the best interest of the company in mind, not you.
If you google top paying jobs without a degree Sales will be the highest paying, or at least in the top 2 or 3. Thats because you cannot send someone to school to be a sales person. Sales people are not "made", they are born, and go to advanced training to become better. Anyone can be a below average sales person, but not everyone can make a great living at it.
So with my first post I hope you add me to your favorites. Please feel free to ask questions. My next post will talk about trades.
