Same Sex Marriage and Miss California
51I can’t believe there are making such an issue out of this. First people are horrified that she posed in underwear, kind of like what Victoria Secret models do on network TV. Give me a break, this wasn’t that shocking. I was happy to see that Mr. Trump was sensible about it. Then it was a big deal that she came out against gay marriage.
I’m happy to see that Carrie Prejean will be allowed to keep her crown, but my question is why is it possible for her to lose it? I suppose someone may be able to dig up an old rule about a pageant contestant posing in underwear but that would be pushing it now days.
Some of you may be surprised but I am totally against this young lady suffering any repercussions from stating her honest feelings when asked a question. She has a right to her opinion and a right to express her opinion; even if I don’t agree with it. She did not use the pageant as a forum for her political views; she was asked a question.
I don’t know why people don’t see that it is most vital that people speak their minds when they are saying something that you do not agree with. This is what has always been a shining symbol of the United States. I believe the saying is, “I don’t agree with what you are saying but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”.
Of course if I went into my conspiracy theory mode I could cook up a lot of clever reasons to make a big deal out of this, but I think I’ll pass on that for now.
These are my novels; pleas check them out.

Sure it takes guts, but her opinion is totally skewed!
I don't care that she said what she did. She has every right to say it, but the problem that I have with it is that EVERY PERSON person deserves the exact same rights, and she doesn't believe that!
I don't agree with what she said, but she had the right to say it.
No argument from me. She has the RIGHT to say it, but it wasn't RIGHT to say what she said. Meaning that the Miss USA Pageant is not a political forum. No one really gives a rat's ass about the contestants' political viewpoints.
The whole point of the questions is to see how well the contestants think on their feet. I've watched some contestants who had scored really high in the "aesthetic" parts of the contest -- including bathingsuit (those bikinis are at least as skimpy as Victoria's Secret underwear) but put their high heeled foot in their mouth with the question.
Miss California had a perfectly good answer going. She could have pulled it off by ending with the "it's good to have choices" platitudes. That way she would have answered without alienating at least 50% of her audience. She should have left her answer vague and sugary. That's what is expected and that is what the contestant who won did.
It comes down to this: You are competing in a beauty pageant. You have competed in others to get this far. By now you should have a pretty clear idea how they operate, and what their expectations are. Miss California would also have been within her "rights" to wear a short gown instead of a floor-length gown. She would stand out, but not for positive reasons. She could have refused to wear high heels, opting instead for flats. Again, she'd be within her rights to present herself "honestly." But that's not the expectation and she undoubtedly would be marked down for doing so.
To sum up: It's a friggin entertainment production. Play your assigned role, don't improvise.
Each person has a right to air there personal views at the same time when somebody represents somethings be it anything then one has to be careful of that too. I mean if she happens to be the "official" representative of California then even that should go into consideration while stating anything in public.
I'm with MM. But snarkier...lol. They should indeed stop calling it a young women's scholarship competition and just go for commercial sponsorships and Playboy spreads right away... My conspiracy theory is that perhaps Miss CA wants to enter Republican politics, or aim for a rich conservative daddy...or she was paid by the Christian right to say what she said. Or, she really isn't that smart, really--so that she just couldn't play her assigned role.
But of course! She had a right to say it, and I'd support that 100%.
Mighty Mom you have a point. It makes one wonder. She would have known how to play the game since she had done it so many times. Maybe this was a calculated move for another purpose.
What good is a pageant, if it is all pretend, and about being politically correct? Questions should be answered honestly. If they didn't want to hear the answer, they shouldn't have asked!
thanks for share with us. great hub
I didn't see anything wrong or anything offensive with Miss California's answer to the question posed to her regarding the same sex marriage issue. What i saw to this event was the conflict between two individual's biases (in this case between Miss CA and Perez Hilton) with regard to the notion of marriage. Now, whoever has the power over the other did his/her best to destroy the other who opposed his/her bias.
Problematic situations like this will perpetuate in different forms as long as we as members of our society find the best way to deal with this issue and settle this conflict once and for all. If interested on how can we do it, check out my hub "An Approach to the Issue on Same-Sex Marriage"
They asked her what SHE thought. She was honest--what she thought. She didn't give a wrong answer. It was a question that should have never been asked any how.

I think it took a great deal of courage to do what she did. She started to pander her answer and then she actually answered the question with her true feelings -- that takes guts!
