A resume needs to be professional and clean. A resume that is filled with typos and errors will be quickly overlooked by hiring managers. Resumes are basically free advertising for everyone. Employers will look at resumes to find the person that will be the best fit for their company. A good resume will include all the skills you have gained over the years, your education, and work experience. Your resume will show the employer that you are the best candidate for the job and they will want to meet with you.

So how do you write a resume? Resumes will vary with each job you are applying for and the education you have accomplished. Here is a resume sample for marketing and some tips to help you write a resume:

Marketing Director Resume:

A marketing director resume is different from a resume that a recent college graduate would write. The resume for a marketing director needs to sum up their accomplishments and education.

Follow this sample resume format:
John Doe
111 N. Executive Way
Portland, OR 97111

PROFILE WITH HIGHLIGHTS
Under this section you will list accomplishments you have achieved in the past with other employers. Things like, "created a new database that generated an increase in sales", or "worked with the marketing specialist to design new programs and services", should all be listed under your profile highlights.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
This section will include information about your past jobs. You will list your experience as a marketing director or as a marketing specialist. Under each job, you need to list a few key accomplishments with that company.

EDUCATION
Once you have listed your accomplishments with your former employers, you need to list your educational background.

That is a sample resume for marketing; this resume format will not be the same for every job type. The longer you are in a job, or you are advancing your career, you do not need to list references. Normally you will need to fill out an employment application and you can list your references at that point.

There are 4 main types of resumes; chronological, functional, combination, or a targeted resume. The chronological resume is one that lists your job history in reverse order. The resume normally begins with your work history and provides information about your most recent job first. This type of resume is preferred by most employers because it is easy to distinguish your recent accomplishments and professional experience. Functional resumes normally focus on your experience and skills. Functional resumes are used by professionals that are looking for career advancement or by individuals that have a gap in their work experience due to school or other obligations.

A combination resume is simply a combination of a functional resume and a chronological resume. This style of resume normally lists your experience and skills before your work experience. The work history is listed in chronological order to help the employer distinguish your recent skills and work experience. The last style of resume is the targeted resume. This resume targets the skills that will qualify you for the job. Generally this type of resume is longer and takes more effort to write than the other resumes.

The best way to write a resume is to understand the industry you are applying for. If you do not have experience in accounting, it will be difficult to obtain an accounting job. You should take a few accounting courses and then start looking for an accounting job. Research the industry you want to work in before you apply. Several resume samples are available online for anyone looking to write a resume. Once you have the terminology of the industry down, it will be easier to target your resume to a specific company or job.

Never lie on a resume, your lies will be quickly exposed when you go in for the job interview or when you are offered the job. Several companies do background checks to make sure they are hiring the right person for the job and to make sure they are an honest individual. Always remain professional on your resume; your email account needs to look professional as well. Some people create new email accounts that are specifically designed for job applications.

Before you start writing your resume, you need to make a list of your skills, experience, weaknesses, objectives, education, and qualifications. This list will help you discover what things you would like to include on your resume. Resumes should be two pages or less, so they do not overwhelm the employer. Resumes must include your contact information. Normally your phone number, address, email address, and cell phone number will be included on the resume. You should then write an objective statement. The objective statement needs to be short and quickly inform the employer why you are the best person for the job. Most objective statements will include information about your career objectives. The objective statement needs to be professional; a poor objective statement will quickly cause employers to throw your resume out.

Resumes need to include information about your education and technical skills. Normally this information is listed at the beginning of your resume, but it does vary for different jobs. You can hire professional resume writing services to create your resume if you have problems writing it. Keywords that are used in the industry should be included on your resume. Several companies send the resumes through the human resources department first. The human resources department will briefly scan the resume for these keywords and grammatical mistakes. A resume that has mistakes will be thrown out. Remember that a resume is simply a marketing piece. You should talk yourself up a little, without being boastful. Be factual with the information you include and provide a brief description with your accomplishments. Action words are the best way to catch the attention of the employer reading the resume. A resume needs to provide the employer with an impression that you have value and you can bring this value to the company.

Most employers will look for weaknesses on the resume. If you do not have experience with the programs or some of the job requirements, go ahead and state that you have learning potential. While some employers will throw out a resume that doesn't have the proper experience, others are willing to overlook it and train you.

Resumes need to stand out from all the others that are sitting on the employer's desk. For each job, the resume needs to be re-written and tailored to the specific needs of the company and the job you are applying for. Generic resumes will be placed into a larger stack and they normally are not called in for a job interview. Read over the job description and look for sample resumes from other people in the industry. A good way to write the perfect resume is to create 2 or 3 versions of the resume. Each version can be compared to the sample resumes and it will be easier to choose the one that is tailored to the company.

If the job description doesn't provide a lot of information, go to the company's web site. The web site will allow you to find out what industry the company is in and what their goals are. The company web site will also help you determine the work environment of the company. It will be easy to find out if you will be working with a team or as an individual. The more information you know about a company, the easier it is to tailor a resume to their specific needs. Having more information about the company will also help you if you are called in for a job interview.

Always proofread your resume for grammatical mistakes and repetitive information. While it is important to target the resume to the employer, you do not want to overload it with too much information. A resume that is longer than 2 pages will be tossed, depending upon the job you are applying for. Employers do not want to spend too much time looking for the right employee, so they do not want to sit down and spend 10 minutes reading one resume. A resume needs to make you sound like a dynamic worker with a human touch.

A resume needs to be clean, which means you should avoid using shadowed and fancy lettering, tables, and italics. Most resumes are uploaded to databases so the employer can keep an electronic copy of it on file. Tabs and spaces should be used when you are dividing the resume into sections instead of using underlying. All resumes need to be printed on white or professional resume paper. Never use bright colors on a resume, and never use scented paper for your resume. The resume should be left justified, as it makes the resume easier to read.

To avoid having your resume altered by other people, save it as a PDF. If the employer cannot receive PDF files, save it as an RTF file so you can view how it will look when the employer receives it.
