I love this kinda stuff. That Bob James is off the hook! I love being educated on the roots of music. I see so many youngsters listening to songs that have no idea the beat was sampled from one of their parent's old albums!
Back when Alien Ant Farm did that Michael Jackson cover of "Annie are you okay", my wife said she tried to tell her young co-workers it was MJ, but they wouldn't hear it! They didn't believe her! They didn't think he could get down like that. All I can do is shake my head. Great hub!
I first got into sample digging back in college. I worked for the student radio station- had my own jazz/blues shift and I would fill in on the weekend hip-hop/rap/r&b show occasionally. One of the guys approached me to co-host a summer-long funk/old-school rap show (nothing like WEFUNK Radio, I assure you). Turned out he was a sample junkie (never would have guessed, right?). The first thing he asked me was "Have you heard of a DJ/producer named Norman Cook?" My response: "Fatboy Slim?" (I had been listening to You've Come A Long Way Baby for a month straight). I forget how long the Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim debate went on, but I ended up with his copy of The Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim Collection and was hooked. The first actual SAMPLE he played was "The Champ (Step Into A World" by The Mohawks. A few years later, I took a class on the history of African-American music. The project I chose dealt with legalissues regarding sampling and copyright law in the US. The research was the best part because it involved- you guessed it-DIGGING FOR SAMPLES!!

I wish I'd made more than one copy!!!!Unfortunately, I had to turn it in before I could really polish it . I might still be able to find the sources I used, though.

Straighten It Out - also used for MC Breed's 7 Years...Clean Up Woman was used by Willie D (of the Geto Boys) for Clean Up Man...and soooooooooo many more....incredible series, man. Keep it up!
sinnerman was also used in the first track of shock value, "oh timberland"
brilliant spot. ive been wondering what that was. and i thought they sounded similar. i guess they are hahaha
