Samsung LN46A650 was released after the much touted success of its elder sibling Samsung LN46A550. It is competitively priced below the mainstream leader products of the same category Sharp 46D64U and Panasonic TH-46PZ800U. The device features a wizard which is activated the very time it is switched on and a couple of queries pertaining to the language and the location of use. After the wizard is completed, the TV automatically scans for channels and it is ready to use.

A notable feature of the product is the remote which is backlit for night time viewing. A large menu button is featured which on activating presents the menu without blocking the viewing to the picture in the background. Most of the frequently used settings can be found in the Tools subsection of the menu. The input source for the TV can also be selected from the menu. One of the major niggles which can be penned down in this section was the Entertainment Setting. Any alteration in the different available sound modes required to disable the Entertainment setting initially.

Another major niggle worth stating is the absence of a PIP button in the remote, although the TV featured it. Besides from that the screen is prone to get smudges very easily and quickly. This may hamper the viewing experience to an extent. Some of the reviews also feature that the sound output is poorer in this model. Only this feature was omitted from the remote, it featured all other buttons for selecting the mode of the picture, altering the aspect ratio. The remote also featured a jog wheel which is usually found in apple’s ipod audio player.

On the different testing platforms, the TV did comfortably good with mediocre ratings on the test results. The device even featured a 120 Hz technology which is primarily meant for panning needs and for assisting fast motion. Pixilation was noticed when the text was scrolled in the TV. Garbling of the characters was also noted in some tests. The device also fared relatively poor in the bluray disk tests. Some of the ports are mounted sideways which makes it easier for the user to connect a USB player and play music as well as scroll through the pictures. An Ethernet port was also featured towards the posterior, which can be used to assimilate feeds in the form of news, weather and financial news if supported by the network. The feeds are taken from USA Today and uses Samsung’s proprietary InfoLink service.

Some of the other features worth quoting as listed in this section. The default resolution is standard HD with 1920x1080 aka 1080p. Four HDMI connectors have also been provided. The contrast ratio of the device is 10000:1. Motion blur is said to be reduced with the fast response time which was just 5ms. The usual precautions while buying such expensive products are to be maintained. Appropriate research has to be done both online and offline. At $1600 it is well worth the money invested.
