Blu ray Discs are fast catching up now that HD format is official declared dead. There had been an inherent war between the two and blu ray emerged as the ultimate winner. Soon after the victory was announced manufacturers shifted into high gear and started manufacturing blu ray players. Blu ray players have been categorized into various profiles namely Profile 1.1 and Profile 2.

Although profile 2 enabled blu ray players are available in the market in the form of Sony’s Playstation 3 and Panasonic’s DMP-BD50, Profile 1.1 has found flavor in many of the existing players. Samsung’s BD-P1500 is also a Profile 1.1 player. The player can be upgraded to profile 2 using suitable firmware updates and even possess Ethernet ports for the same. This has been one of the major selling points for players which are trying to bridge the gap between profile 1.1 and profile 2. A brief outlook into the Samsung’s player is listed below.

The player has a non cluttered interface which is simple as well as clean in appearance. Build quality of the box is only average. Disc tray, power buttons; eject buttons and player control buttons such as play/pause, forward, reverse can be found in the main panel of the player. The display is innovative as well as informative in nature and even has the facility to display the disc format being currently played. The player sports a HDMI 1.3 port on the rear end, coupled with component video and composite video outs. Optical digital, analog stereo and HDMI are the primary audio output formats. Coaxial audio outs and audio outs which are multi channel in nature are also absent in the player.

An Ethernet port and an USB port have also been provided on the rear end. The Ethernet port is useful for firmware updates which increase the existing functionality of the gadget. The presence of USB port allows the user to connect auxiliary devices with the player. The remote has glow in the dark buttons which are favored for those long nights spend with the player.

Since the player doesn’t have much options compared with the other competing products, it is easier to set it up, without much fuss or frustration. Resolution options of the video include 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. The player also hosts varied audio out decoders in the form of Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD.

Because of the presence of Ethernet port, network setup is needed. The device when connected to a network is intelligent enough to assign an IP address to itself, of course with the help of a DHCP server. The author did a firmware update and surprisingly it took 28 minutes for the whole process to be completed. Sadly more common formats such as MP3, DivX, WMA, JPEG are not supported by the device.

The player boasts to be one of the cheapest cost blu ray disc player available at the moment. Stability issues can be ironed out with future firmware upgrades from Samsung.
