S8003 Jet is one of the sophisticated cell phone launched by Samsung. This cell phone has a touch screen interface with TouchWiz technology. The cell phone interface is in 3D and it also supports WiFi, HSDPA network and GPS. It’s also categorized as a fashion cell phone plus as a multimedia phone with a high resolution camera.

Samsung applied the candy bar model not like the S8300 which applied the slide design. The Jet is not equipped with conventional keypads so access of the cell phone menu is through the touch screen. For calling there are 2 buttons (call/end button) on the Jet. Another button is called the Cube Launcher to change the standard menu to a 3 dimensional cube.

The Jet body is covered in plastic using glossy material. Easy to get dirty but the back part of the cell phone has a mirror surface effect with maroon colored strips. The Jet looks exclusive and beautiful, and some people says it does look like the Omnia II.

Samsung Jet share the same screen type with S8300 which is the AMOLED (which stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode). This kind of screen is said to be an energy saver but having a performance similar to the TFT. Its bright screen could display the menu and photos clearly.

When you look at the screen, maybe you will be a little bit dazed; this is because AMOLED is much more effective in increasing the color. The screen has a resolution of 480x800 pixels (WVGA), much better than the S8300.

The interface mentioned for the touch screen is the Touch Wiz, a similar system used previously in Samsung Omnia (or F400). Icons and widgets could be attractively slide around using your finger. In idle position, the widget will be hidden the left of the screen. To call the menu you have to touch the drop down icon. You can custom the favorite menu with shortcuts to Facebook, MySpace, YouTube or your own menu.

Compared to the iPhone, the touch screen interface of the Jet is probably not that responsive, but the virtual keyboard works very nice.

Like mentioned before, the Samsung S8003 has a new menu which is the media gate form as the Cube. There are 6 multimedia menus in the 3d cube media gate which are the Photo Album, Music Player, Video Player, FM Radio, Games and Web Browser.

The camera embedded in Samsung Jet is not as good as the Innov8 nor the S8300 Ultra Touch which has a 8 MP camera, but the 5 MP camera is cool enough. To create great pictures, Samsung Jet has also additional features such as Dual LED Flash, ISO control, macro mode and autofocus. Although it doesn’t have the Anti Shake, Smile Shot or the face detection, the Samsung Jet has the Blink Detection. The dual LED flash could work nicely in minimum light condition and the LED works nicely in macro mode.

Video recording is excellent. The Samsung Jet could produce an mp4 file with the resolution off 720 x 480 pixels. The recording speed is 30 fps so we can expect a clear video result.

Besides the main camera, the Samsung Jet has the frontal camera which could only be used for video calling and not for taking pictures.

Browsing and Data Transfer

Samsung built their own browser which is the Samsung Mobile Browser v1.0, with the capability of displaying xHTML and HTML. With the accelerometer technology, the browser could be displayed in portrait or landscape mode. The internet browser supports multiple tabs. The shortcut to Google mail, search and Samsung Fan Club is available in the bookmark menu so access to the portal will be made easier. The internet browser quality depends on the data bearer and Samsung Jet has a HSDPA 3.6 Mbps network. Although the data speed is slower than the Innov8 or the S8300 (which is claimed to reach 7.2 Mbps), the result of data speed will depend on the mobile operator.

Multimedia

This cell phone has a great interface and also an excellent multimedia feature. The cell phone supports the Divx, Xvid, FM radio and also 3D games. To change the audio file playing, you could shake the cell phone. The shake system is supported by the Motion Gate system. Samsung Jet also has a Bluetooth A2DP support with a female 3.5 mm jack port.

GPS

The cell phone has an internal GPS receiver for navigation via the Google Maps. This feature is also integrated with the cameras geo tagging feature.

Battery Life

Although the Samsung Jet has the energy saver feature, this cell phone is also equipped with a quite large capacity battery which is the 1100 mAh lithium. Standby mode lasts 3 days.

Conclusion

S8003 Jet is a Samsung cell phone with excellent innovations although it takes time to get used to this cell phone. The down side is probably the slow response of some of the menus and also the GPS that’s still need improvements.
