San Francisco is an exciting city. While I don't know this firsthand, it was a favorite of my grandmas, and I recall that she would tell us stories of the city; what she and my grandpa did while they were there, things that she liked and disliked, and various things that they planned to do on their next trip. She loved the mild weather and the shoreline; I remember her telling us about the coast as rocky and precipitous, with little sand. My brother and I thought a beach without sand was strange, but she guaranteed that was just as stunning as the beaches we played on in Florida. The only complaint she ever had was the city's hills and even this was understood that they were simply something that made the city what it was. It's always been a goal of mine to visit this city, and as I was doing a little research on the various attractions offered, I came across a few things to expect on your trip to San Francisco.

Something that I have always found interesting about big cities is the cultural opportunities. I love that there are entire neighborhoods with people from other races and countries. Currently, 39% of San Francisco's populace was born overseas, and ethnic neighborhoods are exciting destinations with chances to shop, eat and experience a bit of another country. One of the oldest and largest Chinatowns in the United States can be found in San Francisco is a popular place for tourists and locals alike to eat and shop. The Asian population has also made festivals that celebrate ethnic holidays such as the Chinese New Year popular events. Japantown, a Little Saigon, and various other Asian cultures, as well as a Latin American population can also be found in San Francisco.

San Francisco also has many venues for the arts. Several distinguished performing arts groups can be found in the city, including the San Francisco Opera, Ballet and Symphony. Several theater venues throughout the area produce stage plays, musical theater, and even improv. San Francisco has also been a leader in rock, pop, rap, and other popular genres. A good place to hear some of these concerts is the Fillmore; a historic music venue that hosts numerous concerts.

A good thing to know about when planning a trip or student tour is transportation. San Francisco has several efficient and fun methods; one option is to ride the Municipal Railway (the Muni). San Francisco also has a cable car system that visitors will find especially fascinating. This system is the last completely operational cable system in the world, and has three lines; it's good option when you're tired of walking up and down hills and need a rest.

These are a few things to get you started. Several museums, an aquarium, and a zoo, as well as numerous sports teams, and magnificent shopping and dining are just a few things waiting to be experienced. Visitors can also get a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge, or take a walk on one of those rocky coastlines. This city is a diverse and fascinating place, and I fully mean to visit one day, and hopefully see some of the sites that affected my grandparents so much.
