Three Great SLO Hotels

Three of my favorite Hotels in San Luis Obispo are the Madonna Inn, Apple Farm and Petit Soleil.  All of these hotels are or were once owned by San Luis Obispo families that continue to contribute to the local community.

The Madonna Inn

The Madonna Inn is great for its unique experience which includes themed hotel rooms and an over the top (especially around Christmas time with the all the pink Christmas trees) decorated restaurant.  The food is tasty and the monstrous slices of fresh baked cakes are worth a trip to the dining room.  The black forest cake is my personal favorite.  The downside is the location since it is difficult to walk to any of the charming parts of SLO.  You'll have to get into a car to get downtown, to Cal Poly and to most other restaurants.  Any frequent visitor to San Luis Obispo should stay here at least once, if for nothing else, to use the fountain bathroom.

Apple Farm

The Apple Farm is located on the North side of San Luis Obispo and is easily accessible to the traveler entering the city coming down Cuesta Grade.  The rooms are super done up in a cutesy farm house sort of way.  If your into cute clutter, you'll love the decor.  If you're not, you might wish someone would put some stuff away.  The Apple Farm offers a restaurant as well.  I've been a fan of the hot turkey sandwich and the apple dumpling for some time.  We have even been known to make runs to pick up dessert on an impulse.  While it's a walk to downtown San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly is close by.  The location is also excellent if you plan on doing wine tasting in the Paso Robles area.

Petit Soleil

Petit Soleil is a small San Luis Obispo inn.  Located a few blocks from downtown, it's a pleasant walk to town and nearby restaurants.  Once inside, the decorations are very warm and reminiscent of a French countryside inn.  The Petit Soleil offers a daily breakfast and a changing menu that is reported to be a combination of refreshing and tasty.

Though I believe it is no longer open, I want to give a nod to the Motel Inn, the first motel in the world. It was even an answer on Jeopary once. I think it is beyond repair at this point, but I did stay there a few times.

Yes, the Motel Inn is closed. At one point the owners of the Apple Farm had purchased the inn and started to clean it up. Then the Apple Farm was sold to John King's group. I'm not sure who owns the Motel Inn now.

The Petit Soleil is very nice and the owners are a local family that is very friendly. Some of the food they serve is great as well.
